TUCSON (KOLD) - Former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona says he and doctors are cautiously optomistic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will survive a shooting outburst.  Investigators say the Democratic lawmaker was shot through the head.

"She has a very severe wound," Carmona said at a press conference Saturday night.  Carmona said Giffords could need more surgery and doctors are monitoring her very closely.

Carmona is a friend of Giffords and also of Federal Judge John Roll, who was killed in the shooting, along with four others.  A total of 18 people were shot.

"Make no mistake, this is going to take a little while to see how she does after her surgery," Dr. Carmona said.  "She could need more surgery. There are lots of complications that can occur with problems like this and so she's in our thoughts and our prayers, and we're all hoping the best for her. But having taken care of a lot of people like this before I know how difficult a path is to recovery."

He praised the emergency workers who respoded to the scene, saying they operated like a combat hospital:  "They served the community well."
