It's been a busy few weeks, and next week promises to be just as busy! I have a couple of stories coming up that I'm looking forward to sharing with you.
Monday night at 11, I'll be investigating the number of registered sex offenders living near school bus stops. It's definitely a story parents will want to see. Then Tuesday night at 11, you'll see the video we shot as I had an opportunity to ride-along with a couple of our animal control officers. Wow.... I'm so impressed with these people after seeing what they face on a daily basis. It's amazing.
I hope you watch, and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Did you notice the calendar today? It's Friday the 13th! Are you superstitious? Do you think the day brings bad luck?
Here's a fun fact I found online..... An estimated 17-21 million Americans are affected by a fear of this day. However, a study found that there are fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft on this day because people are more careful or just stay home.
Interesting, huh?
My younger brother is very superstitious. He and my sister-in-law are expecting their first child any day now, and he's so worried his son will be born on Friday the 13th! Well, if he is, I have a feeling Friday the 13th will suddenly become a very lucky day for him.
Have a great weekend,

This week I completed a special report that, as an animal lover, was very difficult to investigate.... animals left behind in foreclosed homes.
According to The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, up to one million cats and dogs are in danger of becoming homeless due to the poor economy. It's estimated one in 171 homes in the U.S. face foreclosure, and sadly, when some people move, they leave their pets behind.
I was horrified at what we found. We had the opportunity to visit some foreclosed homes in our area, and you should have seen what was left... clothes, toys, and dishes. The worst part.... the pets that are found in the middle of this, thrown away like they're just a piece of garbage.
Watch:
TV5 Investigates: Abandoned Animals
We job-shadowed a man who owns a local preservation company. He's often the first on the scene of foreclosed homes since he's hired to winterize and secure them. He says he's seen everything in these homes from starving dogs who've been locked in basements to dead cats in attics. It's very sad.....but preventable!
There are so many options if you lose your home and can't keep your pet. There are animal shelters, humane societies, and rescue groups. According to the director at The Saginaw County Animal Shelter, some people won't bring their pets in because they're embarrassed and don't want to admit they can't keep them anymore. She says that these groups won't look down on you because you can't keep your pet; they just want to help.
One great website is www.nopawsleftbehind.org. It's an organization that specifically helps animals who've lost their homes due to foreclosure.
You can also reach out to family, co-workers, and friends. Just don't leave your pet behind. It's practically a guaranteed death sentence, and often, a death that's very slow and painful.
And on the flip side, I highly encourage you to visit your local shelter or humane society if you're considering adopting a pet. There can find some wonderful animals. These animals have done nothing wrong; they just need someone to love them. A good website to check-out is www.petfinder.org. This site has a great search engine where you can type in the type of animal you're looking for, age, size, ect, and your location. You may also want click on the Better Mid-Michigan link on the navigation bar. That will also take you to some links of some local animal rescue groups.
Coming up in a few weeks, I'll be working on another story regarding funding cuts for local animal control. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic or any other concerns you have regarding our local pet population.

I had the opportunity to emcee the Imagination Library Celebration at The Doubletree Hotel in Bay City this week. What a terrific program! The Imagination Library is a children books program. It distributes 4600 books to kids in Bay and Arenac Counties every month. Participants receive a free book every month from birth to 5 years old thanks to the generous support of donors and volunteers.
It was a very moving event as we heard from some of the kids themselves. Six-year-old Zoe has been receiving books since she was a baby. She got up in front of a couple hundred people and gave a speech about how much reading means to her.
With so much difficult news these days, it's wonderful to see our young people succeeding and what can happen when a community comes together.
Have a great week!

This morning on Wake-Up we reported that there are nearly 200 schools statewide closed today due to flu concerns. As the numbers grow, more people are becoming worried, especially as the swine flu vaccine is delayed.
Out of curiosity, I went online, as you may have, to see what products are out there to combat swine flu. Wow! Buyer beware! Did you know there's even shampoo that promises to protect you?? Or what about a device that delivers energy waves that promises to strengthen your immune system?
According to a recent article by the Associated Press, lots of scam artists are preying on people's fears and trying to sell fake products. The article says Federal officials have sent warning letters to promoters of more than 140 swine flu-related products. Scary!
So, if you are looking for products to protect yourself or your family, just be sure to use common sense and caution.
Here's wishing you good health!

It's a Brady Bunch reunion at TV5! Tonight a new show is launching on our station called Make Me Rich. It'll be hosted by none other than Chris Knight, AKA Peter Brady. Yesterday I had the opportunity to interview Chris on our noon show. He says Makes Me Rich gives Michigan Lottery players the chance to win more than $4 million in cash and prizes. If you want to be contestant on a future show, here's the link: Make Me Rich!
And yes, Chris still likes pork chops and applesauce :)

Next week, you'll also seen an interview airing on Better Mid-Michigan with Florence Henderson, AKA Mrs. Brady! I'll talk to her about a new program she's created that helps senior citizens with their computers. Better Mid-Michigan airs weekdays at 9AM.
I grew-up watching The Brady Bunch in reruns. It's tough picking a favorite episode, but I really liked the one where Greg hid a goat in his room. Do you have a favorite?

One of our viewers, Sue Swathwood, sent me this great story from Caseville.
Depner's Corn Maze has a life-size, scrap iron Tyrannosaurus Rex on display named "Scrappy". You're asked to help keep Scrappy fed this month by filling his bowl with your non-perishable food donations. All the items will go to Thumb area food pantries helping local families.

Then, later this month, Scrappy will be auctioned on eBay. Fifty percent of all proceeds will be donated to the buyer's favorite charity. I'm told Scrappy has been appraised between $20,000-$30,000!
Depner's Corn Maze is located at 5945 Griggs Road, near the Caseville Golf Course.

What a crazy and disturbing story out of California..... Jaycee Dugard, kidnapped 18 years ago on her way to the school bus stop, found all these years later. She was held allegedly by a couple in their backyard and forced to father two kids with her accused abductor, a convicted sex offender.
That got me to thinking....just how safe are our kids as they go to the bus stop every morning? In Michigan, convicted sex offenders must live at least a 1000 feet away from schools, but there is no law when it comes to how close they can reside to school bus stops.
I started doing some digging and found out that a neighborhood in Freeland is dealing with this exact situation. Late summer, a man convicted of first-degree criminal sexual moved in less than a 130 yards from a bus stop where elementary kids wait every morning.
It's a tough situation for school districts. Do a search of the state sex offender registry, and you'll find there are sex offenders scattered throughout neighborhoods everywhere. If schools were to avoid all of these areas, then it would leave few places to place stops.
What are your thoughts?

Thank you Mid-Michigan!
You didn't let tough economic times stop you from being you generous and making a huge difference for this year's MDA telethon. Nationally, 60.4 million dollars was raised. Here at home, we generated more than $383,000. That's terrific! That money will help people and families right here at home. It'll send kids to camp, buy patients wheelchairs, and help with basics such as flu shots. Just remember when you receive your pledge envelopes in the mail, to follow-through and get that money in. Thanks again. Working together we can make such a difference!

Guess what? The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon is almost here! It kicks-off right here on TV5 this Sunday following the 11PM news and continues through Labor Day.
There are so many wonderful people who work behind the scenes year-round, but one special group of volunteers I'd especially like to recognize....our area firefighters. You've probably seen them out on Mid-Michigan streets the past few weeks collecting for "Fill-the-Boot". Their contributions are tremendous....not just monetarily, but also with the time they donate. Many of them go to MDA camp and spend time with the kids.
I did receive an email this morning from a firefighter asking me to remind folks that the firefighters will be out collecting again this weekend and to be careful as you drive those busy roadways. And remember, every dollar counts!
I'll see you at the telethon. I know we can make a huge difference this year Mid-Michigan!

I had the opportunity to interview a remarkable woman this week. Her name is Gabe Ford, and she lives in Fenton. Gabe has written a book called "Still Dancing" and now travels the country talking to kids about the dangers of bullying. You see, Gabe has a neuromuscular disease that limits her mobility and causes speech obstacles. As a teen, she says she was bullied in school and began to withdrawal from life. It wasn't until she adopted a dog, named Izzy, who was also sick, that she says she was forced out of her shell as she began to take Izzy to vet appointments, ect.
Gabe's book is about this amazing relationship between herself and Izzy. You can watch my interview with Gabe during the Jerry Lewis MDA telethon on Labor Day right here on WNEM TV5.
In the meantime, I'm posting a clip for you!

It feels great to be back! I've been off for a few days for a vacation. First, I went to Pittsburgh for a friend's wedding. (She used to be a producer here at TV5.) I don't know how many of you have ever driven to Pittsburgh from Mid-Michigan, but boy, there are a lot of toll roads! I think I ended up paying more in tolls than gas....okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but it took some getting used to.
I also went to Cedar Point in Ohio for the first time. It was sooo much fun!!! Growing up in Alabama, the closest amusement park was Six Flags in Atlanta. I love roller coasters, so Cedar Point was great! For those of you who have been there, what's your favorite ride?
I also had the opportunity to spend a few days in Hilton Head, South Carolina. It was beautiful but very hot.
The-en..... I got the flu. Yuck.... Who gets the flu in August?? Apparently, it's been going around, so please be careful.
I'm starting to feel a little better now. It definitely feels nice to be back! I missed everyone!

Frankenmuth is going to the dogs....literally! Visit Little Bavaria this week and you'll see some 200 dogs, plus their owners, at Heritage Park. It's the Italian Greyhound Club of America 2009 National Specialty. The visitors are from all over the country, even Canada. The dogs compete in everything from agility to obedience.
Until this week, I had never been to a dog event on this scale. It is so impressive! These dogs are beautiful and so well-trained. I had the opportunity to emcee "The Parade of Rescues". Wow...what a moving event. It showcased dogs who have been rescued. There were some incredible stories, like the dog who had been abused by her previous owner. She had her leg and three ribs broken. Today, she's doing great in her new home.
I adopted my dog, also an Italian Greyhound, from a rescue group three years ago, which is why I was asked to participate. Today, he's doing so well, and he's terrific company. Opening your home to a shelter dog is so rewarding.... I can't advocate it enough.

Did you hear this week that the world's oldest mom died?
Carmen Bousada of Spain gave birth to twins at the age of 67. Just two-and-a-half years later, she's passed away from cancer. Her two-year-old sons are now oprhans. She lied about her age in order to get a fertility clinic in Los Angeles to artificially inseminate her. That sparked a fierce debate about how much control clinics should have over their patients.
What do you think about all this? Should this be allowed? If not, what can be done to stop it?

In just a matter of hours, General Motors is expected to announce its emerging from bankruptcy protection. It's a historical day for the new company.
General Motors, traditionally, has meant so much to so many families, especially here in Michigan.
In an odd sort of way, GM helped me make the move from Alabama to Michigan 5+ years ago. Living in Alabama, I had purchased an Oldsmobile Alero. It was a couple of years old and had been previously owned by someone in Florida, but I loved that car! It ran great. It was also really unique. Very few people in the region had one.
When the TV station I was working at in the south suddenly closed, I did a nationwide job search and was offered a position at the FOX-affiliate in Lansing, Michigan. I was really nervous about moving across the country to an area where I knew absolutely no one. But then something really cool happened. I found out my new station was located directly across the street from the factory where my car had been made! From Michigan to Florida to Alabama and back to Michigan. Maybe it sounds crazy, but to me, it was a sign that this is where I belonged and that everything would be okay.
And it's been better than okay! I love Michigan and have made some great friends here. (By the way, I still have my Alero, and it's running great.)

There are some extremely talented people in Mid-Michigan! This past week a casting call was held for another movie being shot in the area. Bending Spoons is described as a comedy-drama.
Already cast...Oscar-winner Celeste Holm, Richard Pryor Jr., and Lucille Ball's granddaughter. It's being directed by Mark Rupp, who's originally from the area.
An open casting call was held at Pit & Balcony. You should have seen the line! It stretched all the way outside and down the block. People waited for about two hours. Then, some were called back Sunday to read for parts.
I was actually a drama minor in college and really get a kick out of this stuff, so yes, I ventured down there myself. It was a lot of fun. I met some terrific people in line and was really impressed at some folks' acting resumes. There were also some really cute kids who could memorize lines so quickly! Wow! Impressive stuff.
I did get called back Sunday to read for a role. I'm not sure how it went or when I'll know anything. Regardless, it was exciting to be apart of it all! I'll keep you posted. And if you auditioned too, as they say in show business, break a leg!

What a week of incredible loss in the entertainment industry. Why do these things always seem to happen in three's? Have you ever noticed that? This week we lost Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and then there's the shocking death of Michael Jackson.
Despite his troubles in recent years, Michael Jackson is a music legend who touched generations of people all over the world. What's your favorite memory of him? Your favorite song? As a child, Michael Jackson was the first "celebrity" I was became aware of. I was four when a family friend gave me a book filled with photographs and stories about the singer. I loved that book! (I couldn't read it yet, but the pictures were great.)
And what can we say about Farrah and Ed? Both were highly-successful entertainers. I actually met Ed nearly two years ago in Las Vegas. I was attending a conference in preparation of being an emcee for the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon.
As you probably remember, Ed spent many years helping Jerry on that telethon. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with him, but he was very nice and took time to take a picture with me.
I'd love to hear your memories and/or stories about any, or all, of these icons. Jocelyn

Have you been to downtown Flint lately? It's booming! Over the past few months, there have been several new businesses that have opened (including TV5's new Flint bureau).... and more projects are in the works.
The only problem with all of this..... no new parking. That is....until now.
The new James W. Rutherford parking structure will be dedicated tonight. The 8-million-dollar facility will provide roughly 400 new parking spaces. It's expected to open July 1. Parking will cost you $5 a day or $60 a month. The parking deck is at Kearsley and Beach.
The City of Flint has a really cool event planned tonight for the dedication. It includes fireworks, dinner, and dancing....and it's all taking part in the deck! I'm looking forward to emceeing. After all, it's not every day you get to eat dinner wearing a cocktail dress in a parking deck.
Hope you have a wonderful week (...and happy parking),

Well, it's here. Today is the government-mandated deadline for stations to stop broadcasting in analog and switch exclusively to digital signals. That, of course, includes TV5. Cable and satellite-subscribes won't be affected.
However, if you have the old-fashioned "rabbit ears" you must have a digital converter box or you'll lose your picture. Here are a few facts from the FCC..... (I found the list interesting.)
1) Some viewers may have trouble receiving digital channels after June 12 because some stations are changing their coverage area
2) Converter box coupons will still be available after June 12, and can be ordered up to July 31, "while supplies last"
3) Converter boxes will not provide HD programming on an analog TV
4) Viewers do not need a "digital ready" or "HD ready" set to get DTV signals.
If you're having problems with your TV, you can call 1-888-388-2009.

What an exciting weekend! The movie Street Boss held its Red Carpet World Premiere Friday night at The Temple Theater in Saginaw. The movie is based on a true story about how the FBI took down one of Detroit's most notorious mobsters.
It was shot primarily in Mid-Michigan about a year ago.
The premiere was sold-out.....more than 1700 people. It was so neat to see many familiar Mid-Michigan landmarks on the big screen as well as dozens of local people cast as extras!
(I even made it up there in two shots in a bar scene where the mob is given a heads-up that they're about to be raided by the Feds.)
Not all of the stars were able to attend, but many did, including Robert Gallo. They were very gracious, taking time to sign autographs, do interviews, and greet hundreds of cheering fans.
At a time when Mid-Michigan is dealing with a lot of economic pain, it was definitely fun to "escape" to Hollywood for a few hours.
You can see the movie beginning this Friday for a week at The Saginaw 8 Theater.

It dominates the headlines practically every day....job losses. With GM expected to file for bankruptcy any day now, the fear and anxiety keep building.
With that said, tough times have the potential to bring out the best in folks. If you lose your job, you may discover a new career or passion that you never would have thought of otherwise. Sometimes when we're on a tight budget we find ourselves spending more quality family time when, at one point, we would have spent that time on other forms of entertainment. Tough times can also bring-out your creativity, forcing you to come up with new ways to solve problems.
True, none of us want to lose our jobs. I know; it's happened to me twice. On two occasions, I had TV stations close leaving me with no employment. However, even bigger and better opportunities eventually opened up for me. I likely wouldn't be here at TV5 if those situations hadn't happened!

However, it's also important to remember what Memorial Day really is..... a day to remember our servicemen and women who have given their lives for our country.
There are several events planned over the next few days. Today there will be a Memorial Service at McFarlan Park in Flint. That starts at noon. Then on Monday, Midland will hold a Memorial Day Parade at 10AM. That begins at Ashman and East Main. Saginaw will also host a parade beginning at 11AM. It begins at Federal and South Washington. The Bay City Parade was so much fun! Here at TV5 we had a blast. We loved seeing all of you, and wasn't the sun nice? It seemed to come out just in-time.
As far as the race goes, what a turnout! There were nearly 4000 runners. I was so impressed with the talent level. There were some very FAST runners, but I was happy with my time. I ran the 5K in about 30 minutes, so not too embarrassing for my first race. Unfortunately, about halfway through, I lost my ponytail holder. Have you ever tried to run on a windy day with your hair covering your face? Not good, but at least I didn't trip:) Maybe I'll do another race.... we'll see. Top of the morning to you! This weekend is Bay City's St. Patrick's celebrations. Several of us from TV5 will be at the parade Sunday afternoon. It starts at 2 at Center and Park Avenues and ends at Center and Water Streets. There will be marching bands, floats, and lots of fun!
I'm really nervous, however...not about the parade....but what comes before it. I'm running my first race! I'm told the St. Patty's race is a lot of fun, but I'm not much of a runner. I jog a couple of miles daily, but the key word is....jog! I'm not very fast. I've been jogging for a couple of years and do it just to burn those calories. When I've been running for 45 minutes, I'm done, so I honestly don't really even know my pace. Regardless of where I finish, though, it'll still be fun.

It's always interesting to see your surroundings through "new" eyes. My mom has been in Saginaw the past few days visiting from Alabama. While she was born in Michigan and grew-up in New Jersey, it's been years since she's spent time in snow. This past weekend it snowed a couple of inches here in Mid-Michigan. She couldn't believe it when people were still driving!
In Alabama, just the threat of snow sends people rushing home and schools closing. Granted, here in Michigan, we have the equipment to keep the roads clear, but its still amusing. She also got a kick out of how huge the piles of snow get from the plows as well as how beautiful a fresh snow looks when its covering the trees. (But you don't want to know what she used for snow boots..... plastic bags!)

Jiri survived, and today is doing well. In fact, he's even started an organization with the goal of raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and getting defibrillators in public buildings. Coming up on Saturday, February the 28th, there will be a special game at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw to raise awareness. It's called "Shocks and Saves". Yiri will be there, as our local doctors play a game against our emergency medical personnel. Tickets are $10 and get you into a Spirit game immediately following.
You can see my one-on-one interview with Jiri coming up on February 26th at 9AM on Better Mid-Michigan. Have a great week! Jocelyn

Did you see that wonderful cake we had displayed on Wake-Up this morning? It was from Buttercrust Bakery in Bridgeport and just one example of what you'll see at Sunday's 10th annual Chocolate Lovers Benefit. Chocolate Lovers is a huge fundraiser for The Underground Railroad of Saginaw County. The Underground Railroad helps hundreds of women and children every year escape from domestic violence and sexual assault.
This year the event will include ten larger-than-life art sculptures presented by SASA students. There will also be silent auction items donated by local businesses as well as baskets created by several Saginaw County schools. Then, who can forget all the wonderful desserts? I'll be out there emceeing and just maybe.... doing a little tasting. Oh, who am I kidding? I'll be doing A LOT of tasting! :)
It's this Sunday, February 8, at Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw Township from noon-3PM. I hope to see you there! Jocelyn

It's Super Bowl weekend! I know most people watch for the football, but I'm one of those who watches for the commercials! Despite the bad economy, I read that 30-second spots are going for $3 million! Can you imagine? That's actually 10% higher than last year's average! Analysts say this year you'll likely see the popular Clydesdale horses with Anheuser-Busch making another appearance. Also, watch for CareerBuilders to bring back its famous office monkeys.
There have been some wonderful commercials over the years. Which ones are your favorites?
I'd love to hear from you, Jocelyn

Have you checked out TV5's snow desk at Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth? It's AMAZING! Craig McMorris and I had the opportunity to anchor Wake-Up from the desk Thursday morning. Katie O'Mara and Erica Donerson anchored their 5:30 PM show there too.
Basically, its a desk made completely out of snow and ice and built to the dimensions of our real desk back in the studio. Sam Licavoli, who works here at TV5, and his team of 6, took roughly 70 hours to construct the desk. They used chainsaws, shovels, basically anything and everything. The desk is 20x10x10..... and yes, even our seats were made out of snow!
I've had a lot of people ask how we kept warm for nearly 3 hours sitting on snow. We-elll..... I wore 5 shirts, two heavy jackets, three pairs of pants, two pairs of wool socks, and snow boots. I also had those heat warmers in my shoes and in my pockets. Not done yet!.... I also had a blanket on my lap and a heating pad to sit on. Believe it or not, by the second hour, I was cold! It started with my feet going numb....then moved up to my mouth. Not good, when you have to talk :)
However, it was totally worth it! We had a blast, and I hope you too can visit Snowfest this year! There are about 50 ice and snow sculptures, entertainment, food, and of course....the warming tent! Jocelyn

I had the opportunity to speak to the BRAVO! club in Saginaw this week. What a nice group of people! The group meets at the First Congregational Church on South Jefferson. I don't know how many of you have ever been inside the church, but its beautiful. If you ever do visit, be sure to see the stained-glass windows.
The real treat at the church, however, is the area for the kids. Peggy Knutson, the Church School Director, has transformed an entire hallway and half-a-dozen classrooms into an oasis for kids. Each classroom has a theme and is elaborately decorated with murals, puppets, real waterfalls, all kinds of cool stuff! There's a room just for storytelling complete with a tent and sand as well as a drama room with a stage and a working marquee! There's also a computer room and even a room just for relaxing. It's amazing...something you'd definitely want to see for yourself.
It just goes to show you, you never know what hidden treasures you can find in your own backyard. If you have a really special place you'd like to share, send me an email.

Here's an interesting news story I came across this week..... President-elect Barack Obama will have to decide whether to give-up his Blackberry when he takes office. Apparently, the Blackberry is a concern to the Secret Service and to lawyers. If a situation arose, his emails could be subpoenaed by Congress and the courts and could be subject to public record laws. Neither George W. Bush nor Bill Clinton e-mailed while in office. Obama, however, says he's not sure he can make it day-to-day without the device.
That really got me to thinking.... What would life be like without a cellphone, without being able to text someone? We've come to rely so much on this technology. Obviously, we used to function without it just fine, but now that we've gotten so used to the convenience and security it provides, could we go back to the way life used to be? I, personally, would be lost without my cell. How about you? Could you go just one week without it? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
As they say in text-messaging world.... TTUL (talk to you later)! Jocelyn

I just returned from a trip to the Caribbean. It was absolutely beautiful.... 80 degrees, clear-blue water, undisturbed beaches. But here's the weird part..... Everywhere we went Christmas trees were up and carols were playing. Makes sense, right? After all, it is December. However, in my mind, it was July!
That's what it felt like. We walked around in our swimsuits and flip-flops. My poor mind felt so confused!
You may think I'm crazy when I say this, but it really feels good to be back in Michigan with the cold and the snow. It's not the holidays without it! (Now....come February I may have a different answer for you) :)
Regardless of where you are this holiday season, Michigan or an island, I hope you have a wonderful one! Jocelyn

Have you started your Christmas shopping? With this year's poor economy, a lot of people are getting more creative in their gift-giving. Some folks are opting to give gifts to just the kids or maybe just giving one, really nice, high-quality present... rather than a dozen or so gifts you won't even remember next year.
Here's some cool ideas I've read about in recent weeks.... Instead of putting your present in one of those pricy gift bags, place it in a cloth bag that can pull double-duty and serve as a recycable bag at the grocery store. Also, try wrapping presents with old magazines or newspapers. This can save A LOT of money. One of my friends has a great gift idea for her parents. She's taking all the old videos and pictures of her little girl and compiling them into one nice tape for the grandparents. It's not expensive, but more importantly, the sentimental value is priceless.
Just be creative and have fun. I'd love to hear your ideas!

I'm really starting to get into the holiday spirit. Last weekend, the TV5 Wake-Up team emceed Saginaw's Christmas parade. It was cold but a lot of fun! It was so great to see all of you out there.
I especially enjoyed hearing the area high-school bands. It's amazing how talented these kids are! Plus, there were some beautifully-decorated floats.
This week's snowfall is also helping set the holiday mood. On top of that, several of our local radio stations are now playing Christmas music too.
I think this weekend I'll decorate my Christmas tree......Now, we just have to hope that Armani (my dog) doesn't decide to eat the presents again!

Happy Holidays! Thanksgiving is almost here. What are your big plans?
Anything special for Turkey Day? For me, growing up in Alabama, I'd always go to Georgia with my parents and little brothers for a big dinner with the rest of the extended family. Talk about some AMAAAAZZZZING food! Wow! Too bad I didn't get any of those cooking skills for myself......
There are also Christmas festivities already underway. Tomorrow, November 22nd, is Saginaw's annual PRIDE Christmas Parade. It starts at 11AM at Jefferson Avenue and East Genesee and travels to Michigan Ave. south. The TV5 Wakeup team, (myself, Craig Mcmorris, and Mike Cameron) will all be there announcing the floats.
We hope to see you there!

It's that time of year when thousands of hunters hit the woods. Firearm deer season is such a tradition in Michigan.....sons and dads, friends, and don't forget the women!
In fact, a study by the National Sporting Goods Association estimates more than 3 million women now hunt. That accounts for about 16 percent of the nearly 21 million active hunters in the U.S. 2.4 million women hunt with firearms. Interestingly, the fastest-growing group of women hunters is the age group of 18-24.
I, personally, am not much of a hunter. However, I grew-up in a family where hunting was very popular. I remember my dad and little brothers waking up soooo early to hit the woods. My mom and I, however, typically opted for sleep!
What are your hunting stories? I'd love to hear them, Jocelyn

It may not really feel like it outside but walk inside any store, and you'll figure it out quickly. Yep... Christmas is right around the corner.
Better Mid-Michigan is teaming up this year with "Operation Christmas Child". It's a really cool program that provides shoeboxes to kids in impoverished countries. Each shoebox is full of gifts. In fact, since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been delivered across the globe. The gifts include many items we just take for granted, like a toothbrush or a pencil. Toys as basic as a small doll or a bag of marbles are treasured. For many kids, this will be the first gift they've ever received.
I started participating in this program when I was a teenager still living in Alabama. I first heard about it through my church. It's so much fun going to the store and filling up that box, thinking of the child who will be receiving the gift. If you want, you can also send your child a note and picture. I've found stores like The Dollar Tree are terrific because you can get a lot of items fairly cheaply. I've also talked to a lot of families who say their young children love this project. It's something they can do themselves, and it helps teach lessons about sharing and thinking of others.
You can fill your own shoebox or just donate single items. Here at TV5, we're collecting through November 17. We're located in downtown Saginaw at 107 North Franklin, near The Dow Event Center. If you'd like a list of the needed items, just go to our homepage, and then click on the Better Mid-Michigan link on the left-hand side of the screen.

I have a problem. My dog thinks he's a person.
I'll wake-up in the middle of the night, and he'll have his head on my pillow, and the rest of his body covered up in the blankets.
What happened to sleeping at the foot of the bed?
This week I had carefully sliced-up a tomato for my sandwich and had it on a plate on the counter. Yep, you guessed it. Guess who jumped four feet in the air and pulled it down?
Then, the kicker was this morning. Someone had given me a cupcake. I tried it, but it wasn't that good, so I ended up putting it in the trash. The next thing I know.... Armani had pulled it out of the trash can and was eating it!!!!!! Can we say an upset stomach????
Don't get me wrong. He's actually a really good dog...usually. However, I think we need to work on our manners, and I take full responsibility!

I felt like I was in a Grey Anatomy's episode this week.
I had the opportunity to visit St. Mary's of Michigan to see the facility's Da Vinci machine. Before we went into the operating area, we were given disposable scrubs....one-size fits all.

I looked like a giant marshmallow walking the hospital halls! None the less, it was tons of fun, and the machine, its really cool.
The da Vinci machine can do all sorts of stuff.
We were there filming a story for Better Mid-Michigan and showing how the machine helps perform hysterectomies.

This week I did a story about thieves siphoning hundreds of gallons of gas from a couple of businesses in Kochville Township. They stole the gas, both diesel and unleaded, in the middle of the night. Investigators think they used a pump, and then hauled the gas away in gigantic drums.
Then, just the day before, I was talking to my younger brother. He's a college student in Alabama and is planning on flying to Houston, Texas, this weekend to see his girlfriend. The closest airport is Atlanta, but he's afraid to drive there because he'll have to leave his car. Apparently, there's been a lot of problems with people having gas siphoned out of their vehicles in that area. Right now in the southeast, there's a huge gas shortage.
As the gas prices go up, this type of crime seems to be on the increase. Experts say the best thing drivers can do to protect themselves is buy a locking gas cap, which requires a key to open. You can find these at auto parts stores, and they start at about $30.
Getting back to the gas siphoning cases in Kochville Township, as of right now, there have been no arrests. Authorities are looking for a silver-color, late 1990's, extended-cab Chevy. If you have any information, contact the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department.

Wow....as I'm typing this I had to double-check the date. How did it get to be the end of September already??? While summer is definitely my favorite season, fall is beautiful in Michigan. The colors are so vibrant.
As most of you know, I'm originally from Alabama. Autumn there consists of the leaves changing a slight pale hue of yellow, maybe a red here or there. Then they quickly turn brown and fall. My first year in Michigan I walked around with my mouth open when the leaves started to change. SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't take enough pictures.

Don't you just love the way your hair feels when you first get it cut? I got a badly-needed trim yesterday. My stylist didn't take much length off but just added some layering and evened the edges. Today it has such a great bounce in it, and the ends feels so soft..... I sound like a hair commercial, don't I? :)
What amazes me is how easy stylists make it all look! With just a few cuts and chops, everything falls into place. How do they do it? Seriously, I struggle with something as basic as a curling iron. I hate to tell you how many times I've burned myself. And don't even get me started on a flat iron.....
Maybe I get it from my mom. I remember once in third grade, she trimmed by bangs for me. I ended up with bangs that were so short, they almost came to the top of my forehead. (Apparently she was trying to get them even, and just kept cutting...and cutting.....) And you guessed it.....School pictures were the next day!!!!!! This is why I don't own a year book from that year.
Oh well, thankfully there are people out there who are very talented and CAN do hair. From people like me, we say thank you!!!! Jocelyn

"1,2,3...." And with that countdown, the new digital marquee at The State Theater in Bay City was unveiled Thursday night. I had the privilege of helping emcee this historic moment. And what a moment! It was truly magical! There were so many oohs and ahhs when the tarp was pulled down. More than 500 people were on-hand, many whom shared their memories with me of the theater from when they were children....50, 60 years ago.
This has been a project in the planning stages for months and part of a multi-year renovation effort of the theater. Theater organizers are excited because they say the new marquee will allow them to promote more events at once and with greater ease.

GREAT job Mid-Michigan!
Thanks to all of you who generously pledged to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association during our annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. Despite a really tough economy, Mid-Michigan raised nearly 500-thousand dollars! That's tremendous.
Nationally, more than 65 million was pledged.
That money will go to research, providing equipment such as wheelchairs, and sending kids to MDA camp. Your help makes an incredible difference.
Thanks, also, to all of our volunteers who worked behind the scenes. Our area firefighters were out on the roadways for hours collecting money for fill-the-boot. We also had dozens of people who volunteered to take your phone calls and pledges.
Working together, I know we can make a real difference. Jocelyn

Hi everyone,
Just a reminder that the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon kicks-off Sunday night at 11:30 and runs all Monday on TV5. Your pledges make an incredible difference funding research to study the 40+ diseases under the MD-umbrella. Your money also sends area kids with MD to camp for a week.
A few weeks ago, Jerry Lewis came to The Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant to perform. He took a short break from rehearsal that day to meet some of our firefighters who work tirelessly on fill-the-boot. Fill-the-boot raises money for the MDA. I had the opportunity to be on-hand for the meet-and-greet. Let me tell you, that Jerry is such a character! He's in his early 80's and still quite the comedian.
Here's a little bit of the video we shot that day of Jerry meeting the firefighters:

Can you believe it's already that time again??? Back-to-School! Wow....
The National Retail Federation estimates the average parent will spend just under $600 on supplies, electronics, and clothes. But how can you afford that when fuel and food prices keep going up....along with the unemployment rate?
Well, I did some homework, and here's some advice I found from various sites online.
1) Don't do all your shopping before the school year starts. Some of the best sales are in the weeks following.
2) Use the Internet to find deals. Also, a lot of sites offer free shipping and coupons.
3) You can also find deals at garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment shops. (I've been to several consignment shops in the area and have found some really nice name brand clothing in the past, some never even worn, for just dollars!)
4) Make a list and take inventory before you head to the store. You might be surprised what you find stuffed in that back drawer.
I hope this helps. You can also checkout our back-to-school guide on our station's homepage. If you have any more suggestions, please email me, and I'll pass those along to everyone else. Take care, Jocelyn

A piano and air-hockey table were also donated. The club serves more than 2,000 kids in the area. As I mentioned last week, for many children, this is the only safe place they have to go. Again, thank you VERY much!
Secondly, I enjoyed seeing all of you at The Midland County Fair this past week. The weather's been great, hasn't it? There have also been some good acts. I hope everyone had a great time!

"Gee Wally"..... Remember that famous line? It's from the popular 50's TV sitcom Leave It to Beaver. And who can forget little Jerry Mathers, the cute kid who played The Beaver?
Well, little Jerry Mathers is all grown-up. In fact, he's in his 60's now. However, he's just as sweet and down-to-earth as ever.
Jerry was in Mid-Michigan this week for Fifties Night at The Dow Diamond. He threw-out the first pitch for Thursday night's Loons game. Before that, he stopped by our TV5 studios and gave me a one-on-one interview. We talked about what he's been up to over the past few years. This past week I went to one of my favorite places.... Camp Cavell near Lexington.
This is where the Muscular Dystrophy Association hosts camp every summer. It's on the shores of Lake Huron and absolutely beautiful. What's even more beautiful than the scenery, however, are the campers and volunteers. This year there are about 50 campers from across Mid-Michigan, all between the ages of 6 and 18, and all with MD.
These kids are amazing. Many are wheelchair-bound but that doesn't stop them from having fun. At camp, they can do anything! I watched them climb trees, ride bikes, go the beach..... The camp is set-up in such a way that these kids almost forget they're battling these neuromuscular diseases.
Every year at TV5, we host the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day telethon. Camp is one of the places your pledge money goes. I can't wait to share with you again this year all my stories from camp! My photographer, Tom Knaub, and I got some great stuff.
Thanks again for your help. Every donation makes a big difference.
PS I'm enclosing a picture I took with my cell phone. This is one of the campers getting to ride a motorcycle thanks to area bikers volunteering their time.

Okay, so this may be a little gross, but with this past week's humid weather, it felt relevant.
Old Spice has just come out with its list of "sweatiest cities". Phoenix comes in first followed by Las Vegas and Tallahassee, Florida. The list is calculated based on the amount of perspiration an average person would have produced walking for an hour last June, July, and August. Old Spice says people in Phoenix would sweat the equivalent of more than two cans of soda!
I thought that sounded a little difficult to believe until I talked to my friend Lori Jane Gliha this week. (Many of you might remember her. She was a reporter/anchor at TV5 for several years.) Lori moved to Phoenix about a year ago. She says she ended up going to the doctor her first month there. She says she felt really horrible and had no idea why. Turns out....get this....she just wasn't drinking enough water! As soon as she increased the amount she was drinking, she felt great again. In fact, dehydration can be such a problem, that the station she works for mandates that crews take out an ice chest full of water bottles with them every morning before they hit the streets.
Just a reminder, in this hot weather, don't forget the water. Dehydration can happen anywhere, even Michigan.
Stay cool! Jocelyn

We have some exciting news here at TV5!
Recently, a couple of us were awarded with regional Emmys for our work in television news. Katie O'Mara and photographer Zara Maldonado received an Emmy for the piece they did several months ago on a woman who rescued a baby from Haiti.
I received an Emmy for my work on the anchor desk. It was a really fun night! The event was held at The Gem Theater in downtown Detroit. More than 300 people from stations all across the state were there, so it was nice to meet fellow journalists.
I also want to thank you, the viewer, for this tremendous honor. It's because of you that I do this job. You're my motivation... what keeps me going on those really early mornings at 2AM when its tough to get out of bed. You guys are also giving us some terrific ideas for stories.

It's been a particularly violent week in Mid-Michigan, hasn't it?
In less than 24 hours, there were two deadly shootings in Saginaw. One of those killed was a 12-year-old boy. He was shot Sunday evening while playing outside with his friends. A car drove by, and someone started firing shots into the crowd.
Then, on Monday, the 24-year-old son of Flint's interim police chief was shot and killed. The unbelievable part was he was murdered at the same time his father was being promoted to chief and his grandfather was being promoted to Super Chief.
What do you think is the answer to ending the violence? What would you like to see leaders do? What can we do? What will you do?
I'd love to hear from you.

Lights, camera, action! As many of you know, a movie's being filmed in Mid-Michigan right now, and this past weekend, I got to be an extra! The movie's called Street Boss, and it's based on a true story of how the FBI brought down one of Detroit's most notorious mobsters. Some of the stars have been on shows such as the "Sopranos", "Without a Trace", and "ER".
My scene was shot at a bar (Cody's Landing) that was about to raided by the FBI. I played an informant telling the mob the police were on their way. It was so much fun, and everyone was incredibly nice! I especially enjoyed meeting actors Robert Gallo (Tony Jack) and Edward Carnavale (Bobby McCoy).
One of the coolest things about this film is the way the community's being incorporated. The movie's being shot at about three-dozen locations and lots of locals have been cast as extras. Even if you're not in the movie, in many instances, you're still allowed to watch.
For example, I was at Fuzzy's in downtown Saginaw Tuesday where a scene was being shot. Even while filming was taking place, people were still being allowed in to order food.
Whether or not my scene even makes it into the film, I still feel very blessed to have been apart of it. It was a terrific experience.

Have you been seeing all those public service announcements on TV talking about the upcoming digital transition?
Basically, come this February, all TV stations will begin broadcasting exclusively in digital signals. If you have an older analog TV receiving over-the-air programming your TV will go dark, unless you get a digital converter box. However, if you have cable or satellite service, you'll be fine.
On Monday at 6PM, I'll be doing a report on all of this to help explain it a little better. We'll also show you some undercover video we shot at some stores across Mid-Michigan to see how well sales people are doing at helping consumers figure out what they do and don't need.
Let me know if you have any questions you want answered.
Take care, Jocelyn

Congratulations to this year's All-Area Arts Awards winners and nominees!
I was at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw Tuesday night for the celebration, and what a great evening! Marion Tincknell took home the top honor in the individual category for her work to promote the appreciation of poetry. The non-profit award went to "Friends of Theodore Roethke". They're working to promote and preserve the legacy of Roethke, Michigan's only Pulitzer Prize winning poet. Dick Garber and Garber Management Group won the Business Category for giving so much back to the community.
As a member of the Saginaw Arts & Enrichment Commission, I see firsthand the importance the arts play in our community. This includes everything from concerts and exhibits to art fairs and stage shows. There's so many terrific events going on in our community! One, I'm especially excited about, is the upcoming "Saginaw Celebrates Summer". It'll begin June 1st and run through July 31st. This will feature more than 50 family-events across the area. Many will be free.
If you have a favorite event, send me an email. I'd love to hear about it!

Okay, so this a crazy story...one I was told second-hand, but I wanted to share it with you because it demonstrates the power of the Internet.
A couple of months ago a video clip was floating around on YouTube.com. It featured a guy I used to work with at a station in Lansing. This clip was several years old and showed him singing "The 12 Days of Christmas" with the Indiana University A Cappella Choir. (He's now a reporter but is also a very talented musician)
This past week I was talking to a mutual friend. The friend told me that a music executive in LA saw that one clip on youtube and was so impressed, he contacted the choir members. He flew them out to California, ended up signing them to a seven-year-deal, and this summer they'll be opening for Michael Buble.
Their first CD's due out in October. Is that unbelievable or what???
If you'd like to see the clip for yourself, it's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe11OlMiz8

Hasn't this weather been gorgeous this past week? It just makes you want to get outside and take a walk or go for a jog.
Well, I kind of had an embarrassing moment Wednesday. No, take that back.... a REALLY embarrassing moment.
I was going for my daily jog in Saginaw Township. It was 5:30 in the evening, so there was lots of traffic. I came to a busy intersection and had to jog in place until the light changed. Traffic was backed-up on both sides. While jogging in place, I kind of jogged a few inches off the sidewalk and right into a hole.
Yes, a hole. And yes, I fell.
Right in front of everyone. Come on! Who falls flat on their face jogging in place?????
Falling when running is bad enough, but falling in place.... Yikes! A few people even honked their horns, but I didn't want to make eye contact. I just wanted to get out of there as fast as I could.
Unfortunately, I still had to wait on the light to change. And to make matters worse, I cut my knees up pretty good, and two days later, I still have a sore ankle. Don't you just hate it when you do dumb things?
Oh well... I'm sure it won't be the last time... (to do something dumb, not to fall in a hole)
Until next week, Jocelyn

I'm sitting in the newsroom right now, and the phone keeps ringing from viewers who start off the conversation like this.... "You're going to think I'm crazy, but I think I felt an earthquake."
In fact, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, centered in southern Illinois, struck early this morning. It was felt as far away as Milwaukee and Indianapolis. Thankfully, at the time I'm writing this, no injuries or significant damage have been reported.
Getting back to Mid-Michigan, at this time, we don't know if that's what people were feeling around the area, but it certainly sounds like more than a coincidence, doesn't it? Hopefully as the day progresses, we'll get more concrete answers.
I actually felt an earthquake once... in all places, Alabama! Go figure, right? It happened in 2003 with the center of the quake in Tennessee. I remember waking up in the middle of the night, feeling my bed shake. It was so weird. At first, I thought I was dreaming. Then as I woke up more, I remembered thinking, this must be what an earthquake feels like, but it can't be!!!! It only lasted a few minutes, and no major damage was done. It was just such a bizarre feeling.
I'd love to hear from you if you've ever experienced anything like this. Tell us what happened! Jocelyn

Sometimes we get so caught up in life's negatives, we forget about all the positives out there, but I had an excellent reminder this past week of how terrific Mid-Michigan's kids are. I had the wonderful opportunity to help plan and attend the annual Saginw County Boys & Girls Club's Youth Leadership Awards Banquet Thursday night. Wow! Talk about some amazing young people.....
17-year-old Nolan Ford, for the second year in a row, received the Youth of the Year award. He's been a member of the Boys & Girls Club for nine years. Next year he'll be attending the University of Michigan studying neuroscience. He also finds time to volunteer with many organizations. He is an incredibly articulate young man.
Seated at my table was another terrific member of the Boys & Girls Club. Jayeel is an 8th grader who hopes to one day become a mechanical engineer. He also writes and helps design his school paper. It's not every day I get interviewed, instead of doing the interviewing!
The Saginaw County Boys & Girls Club served more than 2000 kids this past year, kids like Jayeel and Nolan. It's an amazing organization really making a difference. These kids are proof, so thank you to everyone who's helped!

It may not feel like it quite yet, but we're getting into the month of April.
As I write this, I'm listening to Mike Cameron talk about the snow that fell overnight, close to three inches in some parts. I don't usually blog about weather and forecasting, since I obviously am not a meteorologist.
However, I couldn't help myself and googled April and weather lore. Here's some of the funny, and interesting, sayings I found.

AHHHHH-CHEWWWW! It's here.
Yep, allergy season has arrived.
Well, okay, I'm not sure OFFICIALLY if it has, but it sure feels that way. I don't know about you, but I've been sneezing, my throat itches, my head hurts, my eyes burn, you know how it goes. Growing up, I tried three separate rounds of allergy shots. They worked great for my little brother, but I never found a whole lot of relief.
I also take prescription allergy medicine year-round and have one of those air-filters at my home. Most of the time, my allergies stay in-check, but come this time of year, its war!
What about you? Do you have allergies? What do you do? I'd love to hear from you!

Wow! It's been a busy week, but a fun one.
Just to follow-up on last week's entry, I wanted to let you all know that being a celebrity server at the Essexville Big Boy was great! Luckily, I got paired-up with Tony, who's a terrific waiter. He made sure I didn't mess things up too badly:) My favorite job was making those banana splits, and I'm happy to report I didn't break any plates, although I did come close to dropping some glasses. Oops.
All joking aside, It was wonderful to see such a great turnout from the community. At times, the line was nearly out the door. All of our tips went to the Essxville-Hampton Band Boosters. Thank you to everyone who came by!
Then on Thursday, I had the opportunity to talk to students at Arthur Eddy Academy in Saginaw about the benefits of joining The Boys & Girls Club of Saginaw County. What a great group of kids! Let's just say I wish I had their energy at the end of the day.
This Sunday, I'll be in the St. Patrick's parade in Bay City.
Several of us from TV5 will be there. At the time I'm writing this, it sounds like the weather will be wonderful.
We hope to see you there! Jocelyn

I'm going to attempt to do something very dangerous for someone with little coordination, serve food! That's right. I'll be a celebrity waitress this Tuesday evening at the Big Boy in Bay City on Center.
It's to raise money for the Essexville-Hampton High School Band Boosters. Eric Jyhla and Cindy Althoff will also be helping out. I just hope I don't have to balance drinks on a tray!
If you're a server, or you've worked in this area before, any advice would be welcomed! (I'm sure my future customers would appreciate your help too).

Wow! It feels so weird to type the date 2/29, Leap Day! I googled Leap Day, and here's the "mathematical" explanation.....
"A leap year is a year in which an extra day is added to the calendar in order to synchronize it with the seasons. Since the tropical year is 365.242190 days long, a leap year must be added roughly once every four years (four times the fractional day gives). In a leap year, the extra day (known as a leap day) is added at the end of February, giving it 29 instead of the usual 28 days."
Whewww! That's exhausting.
Basically, I just look at it as an "extra" day, a bonus day! Do something fun for yourself today. Treat yourself. You deserve it!

Ok, this blog may sound silly, but I'm going to talk about shoes... shoes that hurt your feet!
Do you have any of those? It's so disappointing when you buy a new pair, put them on for the first day, and discover that it's so painful you can't even walk. I recently purchased some black boots. They felt great walking around in the store, but after wearing them out-and-about for an hour or so, YIKES!!!!! But the-en, you keep wearing them, because you don't want to waste the money you just spent. (And besides, you like them to boot, or you wouldn't have bought them in the first place.... no pun intended.)
So, what are your favorite shoes to wear? Any suggestions when it comes to comfort, or are we just doomed?

I had the opportunity to attend the Go Red for Women Luncheon and Conference at Apple Mountain this past week. It was amazing! This was the first year I'd ever been, and I hope to go back again next year.
Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women? It's not something we think about, and I learned there are so many simple changes you can make in your life to protect yourself. Exercise. Just walking 30 minutes a day is great! Eat healthier foods and reduce stress. It's about taking control and keeping yourself healthy.
If we all work together, we can make a real difference. We can save lives! I hope to see you there next year! Jocelyn

Hi everyone!
I wanted to invite you guys to a really cool event this weekend in Saginaw Township. It's the Underground Railroad's Chocolate Lovers Benefit. Yummmmmyyyyy!!!!! If you like sweets, you'll be in heaven. There are some amazing treats from lots of local vendors. Plus, there's a great silent auction.
The best part, however, is that this event raises funds for Underground Railroad. This is a non-profit organization that provides services to local victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Just last year alone, more than 4,000 people were helped.
Again, the Chocolate Lovers Benefit is this Sunday afternoon, February 10, at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw Township. Tickets are $10 at the door. I'll be helping emcee the auction (and helping eat the goodies).
See you there! Jocelyn

I'm sitting here right now watching it snow... big, beautiful, fluffy snowflakes. It really is a wonderland.
I love when it snows how quiet and peaceful everything becomes outside.
Growing up in Alabama, you rarely saw a snowflake, much less, anything that ever stuck. At just the threat of snow, schools would close and people would rush to the grocery store to buy milk and eggs. I find it really funny, now that I've been living in Michigan for several years.
Enjoy your weekend, and go have fun in the snow!

A bunch of us at the station are participating in this national program called "Live Healthy America". Basically, its a 100-day, team-based weight loss challenge. The goal is to exercise as much as possible and of course, eat the right foods. At the end of the time period, you calculate how much weight your 'team' has lost. I'm really excited about it, but I think I overdid it this week. I made myself so sore I could hardly walk!
Let me back up..... I jog four miles everyday, so I figured my legs are in pretty good shape. A friend at work invited me to attend an aerobics class Tuesday night, which I went to and really enjoyed. It was an hour long, and I'd already run that day. It was hard! We did so many lunges! The next day, my legs were sore, but I figured if I ran anyways that would help work that "soreness" out. Yeah, not a good idea. Thursday, my legs would hardly bend! You have to go up to two steps to get to the news desk, and just doing that was a challenge. I'm feeling much better today, but I think next week I'll be a little more careful... Like, maybe stretch first:)
What's the dumbest thing you've ever done when exercising?

Do you like to dance, or at least watch others who can? (That's me, the one watching... I'm terrible!) Anyways, to get back to the point, The Saginaw County Boys & Girls Club is hosting a big event this Saturday called "Gotta Dance" at the Temple Theater downtown.
You may have heard me talking about it on Newsradio 1250 or on Wake-Up. It sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. Well-known couples, along with some of the kids, will be performing different dances like the Waltz and Fox Trot. Theeen..... the audience gets to participate.
(You didn't think you'd get out of it that easily, did you?)
The goal of the event is to raise funds and awareness for the club.
The Boys & Girls Club is a terrific organization that provides kids in the area a safe place to go after school. I've seen firsthand how amazing these units are. The kids get help with their homework, learn leadership skills, and for some, receive their only meal for the day.
"Gotta Dance" is 7 p.m. Saturday night at The Temple. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the door.
Hope to see you there! Jocelyn

How's the new year treating you? So far, it's been fine for me, except for my poor car.
My car issues started a week ago when it started snowing. I had less than 15 minutes to go to get to work, and in that short period of time (and driving very slowly I might add), I slid on the road four times! In fact, I actually had to use my emergency brake at one point, something I've never done in the four years I've owned my car. Turns out, my front tires needed to be replaced.
Sooo, after forking out a couple hundred bucks, I took care of that nice little chore the following day. The shop that changed my tires told me I needed to take my car and get it aligned. I found a place that did that, but in the process of aligning my tires, and don't ask me how, they broke my driver-side front window. It no longer goes up and down. They've ordered replacement parts and will be taking care of that today, but in the meantime, I've been driving around with a window partially-open. I love air-conditioning and all, but I don't need help from Mother Nature in the middle of winter! Yikes!
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed this is the end of the car adventures for awhile.
Do you have any crazy car stories? I'd love to hear them, e-mail me.
After all, misery loves company, right? Kidding!

Watch:

I adopted my dog, also an Italian Greyhound, from a rescue group three years ago, which is why I was asked to participate. Today, he's doing so well, and he's terrific company. Opening your home to a shelter dog is so rewarding.... I can't advocate it enough.
Have a great week!

West Branch has a big event coming up next weekend. It's hosting its first-ever Children's Film Festival. The festival has been created to provide opportunities for filmmakers of all ages to produce positive children's entertainment.
There will be movie showings throughout the downtown area and Irons Park. There will also be seminars and workshops as well as family-oriented events.
I'm really excited because I've been asked to judge some of the film entries. I can't wait to start screening. I know there will be some terrific ones.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Jocelyn

Good luck! Jocelyn

Hang in there if you're going through a rough time. And if you have any tips to pass along to others in terms of saving money, or maybe just some inspiring words, please send me an email! Jocelyn

Summer unofficially begins this weekend with the Memorial Day weekend. For lots of us, this weekend means barbeques, family trips, even shopping excursions in hopes of finding a great sale.
That's just a few of the many events planned. If you know of a special ceremony taking place, I'd love to hear from you. Jocelyn

If any of you real runners out there have any tips and/or advice for me, I'd love to hear it.
I hope to see you at the parade, and if I look a little tired don't hold it against me! :) Jocelyn

I'm the first to admit I don't know a lot about sports. However, I remember watching in horror in 2005 when Red Wings player Jiri Fischer suddenly collapsed....while sitting on the bench!

Kids are going more Hollywood choosing Hannah Montana and Star Wars characters. Thanks to "The Dark Knight", Batman is also a favorite this year, not only for kids, but also for adults.....even pets!
Do you have a costume yet? I'm still looking, myself.
I'd love to hear from you!

I traveled back into time this week. Yes, back to the 1950's. Check-out my picture with Marilyn Monroe!
Okay, maybe I didn't really go back a half-century, but it sure felt like it. Meteorologist Mike Cameron and myself were on-hand at The Saginaw Art Museum for the red carpet premiere of the new Marilyn Monroe exhibit. It's called "Life as a Legend: Marilyn Monroe".
The international exhibit will be here through November 9. It features more than 300 works from about 100 artists profiling the star's rise to fame. Admission is $5 for members, and $10 for non-members.
Marilyn, herself, gives it two thumbs up!

We've already received some great pictures here at the station from some of you documenting fall in Michigan. Many of those are posted on our website, and we'd love to see more. You can upload them here, or email me..... jconnell@wnem.com.

When you get a chance, visit the theater. Let me know what you think. It's showtime! Jocelyn

First, a big thank you to everyone who helped out during our TV5 telethon this past week to benefit The Boys & Girls Club of Saginaw County..... More than $800 was raised.

How many of you have ever been to The Boys & Girls Club? The Boys & Girls Club is a non-profit that helps kids all across the country. That includes everything from tutoring to health classes and field trips.
The Boys & Girls Club of Saginaw County serves more than 2,000 kids in the area, and its growing. It's an awesome place! I've had the opportunity to hang-out at some of the units. The kids area great, and the volunteers and staff are amazing. You visit a site, and you can just tell the kids are learning and having fun. For some children, its the only safe place they have to go after school.
This Tuesday, August 12, TV5 is hosting a special telethon. It'll begin at 4PM on MY5 and then continue on TV5 at 5, 5:30, and 6. Be sure to tune-in to find out how you can help! I know, if we all work together, we can make it a huge success.

He's been in real estate, operated a catering business, and just finished a run on Broadway in Hairspray.
He also has three kids. And yes, he still stays in touch with a lot of the cast. As The Beaver would say, "That's swell!"

Are you planning on seeing the new Batman movie? "The Dark Knight" debuted in Mid-Michigan at midnight. People were lining up at 8PM to get a ticket!
Nationwide, 1600 shows are already sold-out and people are reportedly taking time off work to see the film.
One draw..... this is the last completed movie from Heath Ledger. He passed away suddenly a few months ago. His performance as the Joker is already generating Oscar buzz.
I've always liked the Batman films, but I've never been a die-hard fan. With that being said, I definitely plan on seeing "The Dark Knight". Maybe not this week or the next..... but I will see it, eventually.

The kids LOVED the bike rides!

Again, thank you. Jocelyn
PS Here's a picture of us celebrating at the Emmys! Erica Donerson and Julie Banovic presented some of the awards.
You'll recognize Kim Wells from "Better Mid-Michigan." There's me, and Matt Morawski, a producer from WDIV in Detroit who used to work for TV5. Zara's on the end.... you can't tell he's happy, can you?

Starting in June, there's a Kids' Free Fishing Day on the 7th at the Green Point Environmental Learning Center. On the 11th, you might want to go to the Art and Garden Festival at the Anderson Enrichment Center. It's free too. Then on the 15th, the Saginaw Eddy Concert Band is holding a free family concert on Ojibway Island.

Have a great week! Jocelyn

- An April flood carries away both the frog and his brood.
- April showers bring May flowers.
- April is half March, half May.
- April weather: rain and sunshine both together.
- April weather is more capricious than winter.
- April weather likes to repeat the April Fool's Day.
- April showers bring Spring flowers.
- Don't ever bet on April weather.
- April wet, good wheat.
- A cold April brings us bread and wine.

Soooo, I'm sitting in the newsroom right now, and there are 12 TVs behind me.
The one directly behind me has a woman cooking the most delicious-looking cake! Yum!
It's only 9AM, but that already has me thinking about lunch and want I want. (Okay, I do get up at 2AM, so technically, it feels a lot later than 9 for me) As most of you know, I didn't grow up in Michigan, so I'm curious. Where are your favorite local lunch spots?
I'm always looking for new places to try out. I know mid-Michigan has a lot of great places; it's just a matter of knowing where to go.
I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Kidding!
Have a great week, Jocelyn
