PIGEON, Mich. -- The Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port School District will be closed Friday because of an unconfirmed case of bacterial meningitis.School officials said the disease was thought to have been detected in a kindergarten student at Laker Elementary School. The superintendent of the 384-student district was busy Friday morning answering phone calls from concerned parents.School janitorial staffs were busy Friday swabbing down the kindergarten classroom of the stricken student. The boy is being treated at a Saginaw hospital. He will be allowed to go home 24 to 48 hours after his fever breaks.District officials hope to have schools open again Monday and at that time they'll send brochures home with students for parents to read. The high school football game will still be played because it is an away game in Bad Axe, officials said.Bacterial meningitis is a rare infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. The bacteria is usually spread by direct close contact with the discharges from the nose or throat of an infected person, but can be treated with antibiotics, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Symptoms include high fever, headache, and stiff neck.
