Ike Turner, whose role as one of rock's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogre-like image as the man who brutally abused former wife and rock icon Tina Turner, has died.

Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career, confirms Turner died Wednesday morning at his suburban San Diego home

He was 76.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death.

As a music duo, Ike and Tina Turner were responsible for such hits as "Proud Mary" and "River Deep, Mountain High." They were enshrined together as an act in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Their life was chronicled in the 1993 music biopic "What's Love Got To Do With It," which was based on Tina Turner's autobiography.

The film earned Best Actor and Best Actress Oscar nominations for Laurence Fishburne and Angela Basset for playing Ike and Tina Turner, respectively.

Ike Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work.

He won a Grammy earlier this year in in the traditional blues album category for "Risin' With the Blues."

Born Izear Luster Turner Jr. on Nov. 5, 1931, in Clarksdale, Miss., Turner was married four times and had four children. His first three marriages ended in divorce.

Ike Turner's marriage to Tina Turner -- his second -- lasted from 1962 to 1978. They had one child together.
