MDOC Pushes Back Standish Prison Closure Date

Shut Down Moved From August To October

POSTED: 7:37 am EDT July 4, 2009

The Michigan Department of Corrections said it will delay plans to close the Standish Max Correctional Facility.

The prison is one of several across Michigan slated to close in order to save the state some cash during a budget shortfall.

Community members have picketed against the closure, and also held candle-light vigils and posted signs of support for prison employees across town.

Residents said they are overjoyed that their persistence has paid off -- if only temporarily.

More than 300 people are expected to lose their jobs when the prison closes its doors.

Officials said the closing date has been moved from August to Oct. 1.

Community leaders, business owners and guards said they will continue to hold peaceful protests three times per week until the state changes its direction on the prison’s closure.

The Standish facility is the newest prison in the state and was built in 1990.

Meetings will begin next week to the discuss the logistics of the new closure date.
