HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- More catalytic converters have been taken out of cars in Bay County’s Hampton Township.Last week, at least eight people were the target of thieves at five different apartment complexes.Over the weekend, at least 15 more people were hit. Recent rises in the price of metals and easy access to the undersides of tall trucks and SUVs has brought on an onslaught of thefts across the country. The newer and higher off the ground the vehicle is, the more appealing it is to "cat" thieves.
A tall SUV is easy to get under and people can use a battery-powered hack saw or reciprocating saw to cut the converter loose.Resale prices for the hardware can approach $200.In the last five days 46 catalytic converters have been stolen from cars in Bay City area apartment complexes.
