Road Construction Strands Midland Family

Quarter-Mile Of Mud Is All One Family Has For Roadway To Home

A Midland County family is claiming road work has left them unable to leave their home.

Road crews are working to extend M-30 to connect with M-20 near Sanford. When TV5 showed up to talk with the Gross family, they found Rick Gross' van stuck on the muddy road.

He and his wife, who is battling multiple sclerosis, live on Wackerly Road near Meridian Road in Midland County's Jerome Township.

The road is so bad and impassible, Rick Gross had to walk a quarter of a mile to tell his story.

TV5 contacted Larry Hughes with the Midland County Road Commission.

He said the county agreed to maintain Gross' driveway but he's passing the blame for this muddy mess.

Hughes released a statement that said, "The contractor neglected to put a cross tube in, to outlet the water. Then, a private individual hauling wood rutted the driveway, causing Mr. Gross’ van to get stuck."

After TV5 left the scene, Hughes showed up to check things out for himself.

Gross said several workers have volunteered to use a crane to tow his van out of the mud.
