Arenac County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 59-year-old Bay City man after a high-speed chase that started with the theft of $4.23 in gasoline.

The incident started around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Port Marina gas station in Au Gres.

The suspect pumped the small amount of gas and left without paying.

He was headed southbound on U.S. 23 when a deputy started following him and the chase began.

After hitting speeds in excess of 100 mph and through several county roads, it ended when the suspect exited U.S. 23 at M-65 and lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a ravine.

The man was treated and released but is now lodged in the Arenac County Jail awaiting arraignment on a felony fleeing and eluding third-degree charge as well as misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and larceny of gasoline.
