An afternoon fire has been contained at an apartment complex on Millard Street in Saginaw.

Authorities said the fire at 505 Millard was caused when a man left a grease-filled pan on the stove.

There were initial reports of explosions but firefighters said those sounds were from canned goods being set off by the blaze.

"I was shocked," said the man who's stove ignited the grease. "I thought I cut the stove off."

He added, "I lost everything I had in there."

Two people were taken away by ambulance and treated for smoke inhalation, one of them is Saginaw police officer who responded first to the scene and managed to get everyone out of the building.

The second person is a woman who worked and lived at the complex and also helped get people out.

The complex had 14 units occupied, and some families are now homeless.

The apartment manager said they have other sites they can use to house people now without homes.

The fire marshal said the building is safe enough for crews to go in and start cleaning up so those disposed can get into their homes as soon as possible.
