Police Still Searching For Trail Rapist

Zilwaukee Trail Walkers Urged To Be Aware Of Surroundings

It's been over a month and police are still on the search for a man who one teenager said attacked her while she was on the Zilwaukee multiuse trail.

Police released a sketch of the man they are looking for and while several tips have come in, they still don’t have a suspect in custody.

As you stroll down the trail in Zilwaukee, its easy to get a false sense of security.

Most of the path is out in the open, with cars, homes and pedestrians all around.

People are urged to remain cautious, with Sheriff Charles Brown stating that “the detectives have been working on this every day."

Saginaw County sheriff’s detectives fielded several tips from the public after a sketch of the suspect was released.

"We're very concerned though,” Sheriff Brown went on to say, “that being as violent of a crime as this is that it could happen again."

Meanwhile, things have returned to normal on the once peaceful pathway stretching from the Saginaw River to Venoy Road.

"There's still single people walking, I think it was a one time deal,” said Van Arnst, a resident of Zilwaukee. “There's not a lot of crime [here]."

Regardless of how little crime the area has seen in the past, deputies said there is still a very real threat out there.

Police know this person needs to be taken off the street, and until he is, authorities have suggestions for trail users: be aware of your surroundings, walk in pairs, carry a cell phone, don’t walk at night and tell people where you are going.

Investigators believe the suspect is a local man because he seemed to be familiar with the trail.

He is described as Hispanic, in his late 20s or early 30s, with short black hair.

He is between 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches with a medium-built frame.

Tipsters may remain anonymous and be eligible for a $10,000 reward by calling Crimestoppers at 800-422-JAIL.
