A strong gas odor because of a broken boiler forced the evacuation of Merrill Park Elementary School on Friday.

The school is located on 1800 Grout St. on the southwest side of Saginaw.

School officials said the students were evacuated just after 8 a.m. to the Boys and Girls Club.

Firefighters and Consumers Energy deemed the building safe just before 9 a.m. and students were allowed back inside shortly after.

"Our staff followed the proper protocol." said Safiya Mosley, manager of communications for the district. "We received the students that were in route to school and put them in a safe location."

No injuries were reported.
