A Bay City journeyman roofer with Stephenson & Sons Roofing, of Burton, was seriously injured Tuesday morning on a job site at Kraft Foods in Battle Creek.

Martin Wrona, 43, was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo with serious head injuries.

TV5 spoke with the foreman for Stephenson Roofing, Pat Dunning, and with Battle Creek Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Woodward.

They said the accident happened at 9:30 a.m. when Stephenson Roofing employees were setting up a crane when the boom collapsed.

Part of the boom hit Wrona in the head. Woodward said the fire department was already on scene for a safety training exercise with Kraft Food employees.

Firefighters heard the noise of the collapse and went to Wrona’s aid immediately, treating him until EMS arrived.

MIOSHA has been called in to investigate the incident. Wrona’s condition is unknown, but his family is at the hospital in Kalamazoo.
