It happened on northbound Interstate 475 near Atherton Road around 7:30 p.m.

Flint police told TV5 that Sergeant Charlie Mitchell was placing flares on the road when a 70-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, hit a guardrail and then slammed into him.

Mitchell is a 23-year veteran of the Flint Police Department.

The woman is in fair condition at a Flint hospital.

Her name is not being released at this time.
