Flint Police, Fire On Budget Chopping Block

Possible Budget Cuts Could Affect Public Safety

The Flint City Council approved some major budget cuts Monday that included layoffs of about 90 police officers and firefighters.

The cuts were made to help offset the city’s $14 million budget shortfall.

Nearly 70 officers have already been pink slipped and the city is planning to lay off about 22 firefighters.

The cuts could also lead to the closing of at least one fire station in Flint.

Acting Mayor Michael Brown will hold town hall meetings this week to address public safety.

The meetings are open to the public and the first one is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Brennan Community Center, 1301 Pingree Ave.

Other meetings and times include: 6 p.m. Tuesday at Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint; 9 a.m. Thursday at Lincoln Park United Methodist Church and 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Christ Enrichment Center.

Last week Brown appointed Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock as the city’s director of public safety.

Lock, who will remain the city’s police chief, will also oversee the Flint Fire Department and 911 Dispatch Central.
