MACKINAW ISLAND, Mich. -- Authorities said a fifth-grade student from the Saginaw School District who was on a field trip has died in an apparent drowning at a hotel pool in Mackinaw City.Police said 10-year-old Jaylin Ferguson of Saginaw was found at the bottom of the Holiday Inn Express pool on Tuesday night by another student, and adults began CPR before an ambulance arrived.Ferguson was swimming in a pool with his classmates when the accident happened.The Zilwaukee International Studies School student was pronounced dead at Straits Area Hospital in St. Ignace.District spokeswoman Safiya Mosley said the boy was with a group of about 45 students visiting Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island.She said the trip was chaperoned by district staff, teachers and volunteers.Mackinaw City Police Chief Patrick Wyman said between 20 and 25 students, the 12 chaperons, and 2 teachers were in the pool area at the time of the drowning.The chief said a student had located the Ferguson on the bottom of the pool in approximately 5 feet of water in an unresponsive posture and another student was able to bring him to the surface for the adults to begin CPR.Mosley said grief counseling was to be provided at Zilwaukee International Studies School.Ferguson's parents traveled to St. Ignace late Tuesday night.The students on the trip are expected to be returning home Wednesday.A fund has been set up to help the family cover funeral costs.If you would like to donate, checks can be made to: C/O Jaylin Ferguson Family.The checks can be dropped off at any branch of the United Financial Credit Union who have locations in Freeland, Chesaning and Saginaw areas.You can also mail donations to:Untied Financial Credit Union C/O Benefit Account for Jaylin Ferguson | P.O.
