FLINT, Mich. -- The ongoing economic meltdown already has taken a heavy toll on Flint, now it's claimed the city's annual fireworks show.Without the city or Genesee County chipping in to cover the cost, the Greater Flint Arts Council has been forced to cancel the show. The announcement was made on Tuesday. It's the first time the city won't have a fireworks show since former Mayor Woodrow Stanley brought the summer festival back in 1992."We felt that rather than doing something small and disappointing and have people criticizes us," said GFAC President Greg Fielder, “We would just bow out and not doing anything at all.”City spokesman Bob Campbell said the city doesn't have the funds to cover the fireworks or the required overtime for public safety officers. The arts council said it's trying to come up with ways to bring the show back next year.If you’re sticking a little closer to home this Fourth of July weekend TV5 will take you to four different firework shows around Mid-Michigan.We’ll be in Saginaw, Bay City, Midland and Fenton for their big shows.Catch the TV5 Firework Special on July 4 beginning at 10 p.m.
