An off-duty firefighter and registered nurse are credited with saving the life of a teen who nearly drowned at Sandlake Beach in Grant Township on Saturday.

Michigan State Police said Josh Waldrop, 16, was canoeing with friends when he decided to jump from his canoe and began swimming toward a designated swimming area at Sandlake Beach.

Witnesses told troopers that Waldrop disappeared shortly after leaving his canoe.

An off-duty Monitor Township firefighter noticed cries for help and rushed into the water. He located Waldrop’s body submerged underwater and used an inflatable water craft to bring him to shore.

Once on shore, a registered nurse who was at the beach with her family performed rescue breathing and CPR on the victim.

Waldrop was transported to Tawas St. Joseph Emergency room for further medical treatment.

His current condition is unknown but troopers said Waldrop is breathing on his own.
