SAGINAW, Mich. -- A Mid-Michigan family is Florida-bound after wining HGTV’s 2009 Green Home Giveaway on Sunday.Saginaw’s Kari Coffey won the $750,000 grand prize, including a modern Spanish-style home in Tradition, Fla., (near Port St. Lucie) and a 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid.Coffey, a lab technician for the Saginaw County Department of Health, was randomly chosen from nearly 17 million entries.Their current home was built in the 1950s and isn't very green but the new home is arguably the greenest home in the country. The 2,430-square-foot home features innovative green elements like the Energy Star-rated roof, tubular skylights that allow natural light into the home and a rainwater harvesting system that collects rainwater from the roof to be used for nearby irrigation. The home boasts hard wood ceilings that were made with 8-inch-wide recycled planks and the Coffey's new coffee table is also made with recycled products as well.According to HGTV.com, Coffey said she and her family look forward to visiting their new home for the first time and touring their favorite spaces: the screened porch, the children's bedroom and the hydroponic garden. Her husband, Mike, is an independent contractor for a snack food company. The couple just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary and have a 4-year-old daughter.Other green features of the home included permeable pavements, drought-resistant landscape and the use of extensive materials made from recycled sources.Take a virtual tour of every room in the Florida home by visiting www.HGTV.com/green-home.
