SAGINAW, Mich. -- A man critically injured during a triple shooting on Sunday has become the second person to die from the attack, Saginaw police said Monday.Barnell Amos, 35, had been hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting at his home in the 500 block of South 23rd Street near Burt.Amos was one of three people shot just after 4:30 a.m. His passing marks the city’s ninth homicide for 2009.Devin Elliot, 9, died the day of the shooting and Amos’s 29-year-old girlfriend, Lavora Santos, remains in serious condition. So far, no arrests have been made and the investigation continues. Police said they interviewed several people but no one has been taken into custody.Elliot was a fourth-grade student at Heavenrich Elementary School. Grief councilors were on hand Monday to help other students deal with the loss.Police said Amos and Santos were not related to Devin, but the boy spent much of his time with the couple as the residence was just around the corner from his school.Watch:
Mother Speaks Out On Son's Shooting Death"It seems clear this child was shot dead while he was in bed sleeping," Saginaw County prosecutor Michael Thomas said during a news conference on Sunday. "Whoever did this, we need to get them off the street as soon as possible."Thomas said he hopes the community will take a stand against the violence and that someone will come forward with information in the deadly shooting.“To take a 9-year-old’s life and point a gun at him and shoot him in the head -- that’s really, really cold-blooded,” said Larry Camel, with Parishioner’s on Patrol.Police are still trying to piece together evidence from the shooting, but said they believe the gunman’s motive was likely robbery.Watch:
Boy's Murder Revives Death Penalty Debate“Someone has information,” said Saginaw City Councilman Amos O’Neal. “And you have to think about it -- this was someone else’s child today. Tomorrow it could be mine.”Police are still searching for suspects but said they need help from the neighborhood to crack the case.A $6,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the killing.“You can't sit around and just not do anything, because last year it was 16- and 17-year-olds. This year, it's 10 and nine years olds -- the numbers are going down,” said Camel. “Are we going wait until they shoot babies in the crib before we get outraged?”Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Saginaw Police Department.WNEM TV5 wants to know what you think can be done stop the violence in Saginaw and Flint.
