SAGINAW, Mich. -- Published reports said the White House is close to selecting a U.S. location for some Guantanamo Bay detainees to be transferred to once the facility closes, but it won’t be in Standish.Fox News is reporting the Obama administration said Standish’s maximum security prison is no longer being considered as a place to house the Guantanamo Bay detainees. The administration official did not disclose what the final possible locations were.Senior administration officials also acknowledged for the first time Friday that difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving other questions mean the president's promised Guantanamo Bay prison closure January deadline may slip. The U.S. military prison in Cuba was created by former President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as a landing spot for suspected al-Qaida, Taliban and foreign fighters captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere. But it has since become a lightning rod of anti-U.S. criticism around the globe. There are approximately 225 detainees still being held at the prison. The Standish prison is one of three maximum security prisons, along with five prison camps, slated to close as a way to save the state money.Stay tuned to WNEM.com and TV5 as more information becomes available.
