SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Months ago, work on a section of railroad track was supposed to have been fixed, but now residents crossing over those tracks in Saginaw Township said they are nearly undrivable. When the tracks were first repaired, TV5 received complaints about the poor job officials had done and when we reported on the situation, signs were simply added to the area warning drivers of a “bump.”Vehicles routinely slow down to a crawl when approaching the tracks, causing traffic backups and possible hazardous situations for other drivers. To begin with, the track crossings were rough and in need of replacement.Railroad officials and Michigan Department of Transportation closed parts of Bay Road between Shattuck and Weiss for four days to fix the tracks. When the fix was revealed, residents were upset that only three feet of asphalt was put down on either side of the tracks and when it settled, a rut and high bump formed along the entire roadway where it meets the tracks.Eric and Kellie Crane work at an appliance store by the tracks. They said drivers don’t need to worry about a train barreling down at them.Vehicles almost come to a complete stop just to keep their car in one piece while crossing.“A week and a half after they opened up the road, we were picking up hubcaps out of our driveway,” said Kellie.MDOT spokeswoman Anita Richardson said that situation will no longer be the case. After months of complaints, MDOT is finally listening and doing something to remedy the situation.Plans have been drawn up to smooth out the bump and repave the approaches to the tracks. So, after a summer of finger-pointing between a local railway company, MDOT and the county road commission -- each saying the other was responsible to fix the bumpy 4-foot-wide stretch of road -- something is being done to make the transition from road to tracks and back bearable again.MDOT plans to start the work on the crossing by the end of this month.
