SAGINAW, Mich. -- Many families and employees are wondering where to get a seasonal flu shot, either for themselves or a child.Covenant Healthcare spokeswoman Leslie Perry told WNEM TV5 that the hospital will not give flu shots to children under 9 years old."It really needs to be done by a primary care physician because they know exactly what the whole health picture of that patient is,” said Perry. “We don't have that whole picture of their entire medical situation."Walgreens said they are following a similar protocol but will not see children less than 16 years of age, saying young children have so many other underlying issues that they really need to get the vaccine from their primary care doctor. The health officer at the Genesee County Health Department said the disparity is due to the fact there are a number of different manufacturers of vaccines and are only approved for certain ages.In addition to that, each company has their own policy of who they feel comfortable providing a vaccine to.As far as county health departments and medical facilities, Saginaw County is out of shots until late November.Bay County reported it has a few adult doses left and Midland County is completely out of doses.A new shipment comes in for them in about a month. The Genesee County Health Department said it does have doses, and Covenant Med Express in Saginaw has doses for adults, children ages 9 to 16 must have an order from their primary care physician and must be able to take an adult dose.At local retailers, Kroger pharmacies said they will be out of doses by Monday or Tuesday.Walgreens, Rite-Aid and Walmart all have adult doses and both Rite-Aid and Walmart will vaccinate children 4 years old and up.
