Chippewa Tribe Gives Away 2-Percent Money
School Districts, Municipalities Receive Hundreds Of Thousands In Grant Money

ISABELLA COUNTY, Mich. -- The Saginaw Chippewa Indian tribe is handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in 2 percent money.The 2 percent proceeds come from casino slot machines and are given as grants to area towns and schools.Saganing hit the jackpot, with four school districts and 15 municipalities receiving grant money.Saganing received more than $700,000, and more money will be distributed Wednesday in Isabella County.Twice a year the tribe doles out the 2 percent money.The Arenac Eastern School District was awarded a six-figure stipend.“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Patrick Bootz, with Arenac Eastern. “We can really use the money for computers.”Arenac County is also a big winner, with a check from the tribe for more than $80,000.“We will use the money for the housing commission to get people taken care of [and] improvements at the fairgrounds,” said Arenac County chair Ray Daniels.The tribal chief said the donations are all about giving back to the community.“This is just one way we can help the people in our area,” said Chief Fred Cantu. “It’s something we are happy and proud to do.”To date, the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe has handed out more than $101 million in 2 percent money since the spring of 2004.
