This year the Michigan National Guard 1434th Engineer Company and many other military members currently deployed to the Middle East and abroad will be receiving a care package, just in time for the holidays.

The Bay County Vietnam Veterans Monument Committee issued a release Tuesday thanking everyone that turned out or donated to the cause.

The group said over 900 care packages were sent, with a total shipping weight at 9,600 lbs and costing $13,000.

A myriad of items were sent to the troops -- such as food, phone cards, DVDs and CDs -- mainly donated by Mid-Michigan residents.

While this year’s care package drive is over, there are still many ways to help troops stationed overseas for the holidays.

The Veterans Committee said sending a loved one’s address to sendsantatobaghdad@yahoo.com can give them access to a care package in the future.
