UPDATED: 6:09 pm EST December 8, 2009

Police in Bad Axe were investigating a bank robbery that occurred early Tuesday morning.

Investigators said a robber walked into the Chemical Bank on North Van Dyke Road just after 9:45 a.m. and demanded money.

Police were able to compile enough evidence from the bank’s surveillance system that, in conjunction with tips from the public, led to a suspect.

Authorities learned the suspect’s girlfriend had called a Bad Axe area school to request that her child be released due to an unknown emergency.

The school was notified of the situation and was put into a temporary lockdown.

Authorities staked-out the George E. Greene Elementary School and at 12:47 p.m. both the suspect and his girlfriend arrived at the location.

Both were taken into custody without incident.

Police said a large sum of cash was found on the 29-year-old Port Austin man, whose name was not released.

Investigators said no weapon was found on the man, but it is unclear whether he was armed at the time of the bank robbery.

Detectives said $4,690 in cash was recovered from the suspect.
