SAGINAW, Mich. -- A fierce storm moving across the Midwest has dumped 4 to 6 inches of snow on the western and central parts of Michigan.The National Weather Service said snow would be heavy at times in the northwest Lower Peninsula starting Tuesday night and by Thursday morning accumulations of 12 to 16 inches were expected in places.A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday for much of Mid-Michigan, with the First Warn 5 forecast calling for a mix of snow, sleet and rain across most of the region.As of 6 a.m., Mount Pleasant leads Mid-Michigan snow totals with 6 inches.Gladwin has reported 4.2 inches of snow, 3.5 inches of snow has fallen in Auburn and Saginaw reported just over 3 inches.
TV5 Viewers Help Cindy Althoff Build Snowman In the northern Lower Peninsula, the weather said 8 inches has fallen in Charlevoix, Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Missaukee counties.Motorists should expect very hazardous driving conditions due to a slushy coating of snow on area roads.Winds will be coming from the east at 20 to 30 mph with the chance of gusts to 45 mph after noon.Temperatures will remain steady around 35 early, then slowly fall by Wednesday night.Cold air from Canada is expected to push southeast into Mid-Michigan overnight and Thursday’s high temperature should be a chilly 20 degrees."It's going to be true winter-time weather," WNEM TV5 Meteorologist Mike Cameron said. "Wind chills could be below zero at times overnight. It's real bundle up kind of weather."In addition, widespread power outages have been reported due to the wintry weather.If you travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.The southwestern portion of the state was expected to get snow, sleet and freezing rain.About 1 to 3 inches of snow fell in southeastern Michigan, where an additional 1 to 2 inches and winds approaching 60 mph were expected, with greater accumulations in the northern suburbs of Detroit.The Upper Peninsula also was expected to get hit by the storm, with "significant snow accumulations" forecasted.
