A 27-year-old man has been charged with open murder in the death Megan Alexandra Walter, who was found stabbed to death in a Midland apartment complex earlier this month.

Midland County Prosecutor Michael Carpenter announced Tuesday that suspect Cody Douglas Nelson could face life in prison if convicted of the stabbing.

Walter, 22, was found dead in her Woodland Place apartment Dec. 9 after police were dispatched to check on her well-being.

Nelson, a resident of the apartment where the victim was found, was arrested by police after he checked himself into Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland the same day.

Police have not said why he went to the hospital.

Nelson was being held in police custody after being arrested on two unrelated warrants, one out of Midland County and the other from Bay County.

Carpenter told WNEM TV5 that Midland officers and Michigan State Police troopers worked tirelessly during the investigation and apprehension of Nelson.

"I am extremely pleased with the collaborative efforts between the two agencies and I am confident with the evidence we have in this case," Carpenter said.

Nelson is expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon. He is being held on a $10 million bond.
