Senators Sign D Smith

POSTED: 4:46 pm EDT July 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Jason Smith to a two-year contract Tuesday.

Smith, 34, is a veteran of 14 NHL seasons, scoring one goal and nine assists in 77 games last season with Philadelphia. He added two assists and a team- leading 56 hits and 45 blocked shots in 17 playoff contests during the Flyers run to the Eastern Conference finals.

The Calgary, Alberta, native is a former first round selection of the New Jersey Devils (18th overall) in 1992, going on to don the captain's "C" in each of his last six seasons with the Oilers and then Flyers.

The Senators will be Smith's third team in the past three seasons. Philadelphia acquired his rights July 1, 2007 along with forward Joffrey Lupul from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Joni Pitkanen, left winger Geoff Sanderson and a third-round draft choice in 2009.

In 945 career games, Smith has amassed 40 goals and 168 points for New Jersey, Toronto, Edmonton and Philadelphia.
