NHL Game Summary - Detroit At Dallas

POSTED: 11:52 pm EDT May 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - Mike Modano's third-period power-play goal proved to be the game-winner, as the Dallas Stars staved off elimination with a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals at American Airlines Center.

Loui Eriksson and Brenden Morrow also scored for the Stars, who trail the series, 3-1. Sergei Zubov collected two assists, while Marty Turco stopped 33- of-34 shots to earn the win.

"He came up with a heck of a game for us tonight," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said of Turco.

Henrik Zetterberg lit the lamp for the Red Wings, who had won nine straight playoff games, the best streak in a single season in franchise history. Chris Osgood allowed three goals on 22 shots to record his first loss in the postseason.

Game 5 of this series will take place in Detroit on Saturday afternoon.

Detroit dominated the middle stanza territorially and had a power-play goal disallowed near the midway point of the frame because the official determined that Tomas Holmstrom interfered with Turco. The replay clearly showed Holmstrom was not in the crease.

"It was a goal," Zetterberg said. "Homer was outside the crease, nothing new to that. Everything goes really fast out there and unfortunately it was a missed call. I don't think it is a rule but that's that. I don't think the loss came on that call."

The Stars grabbed their first lead of the series with 23 seconds to play before the second intermission. Stephane Robidas moved in from the right point and snapped the puck on goal. Osgood got a piece of it, but Eriksson was standing on the doorstep and hammered home the rebound.

Off a Dallas turnover in the offensive zone, the Red Wings knotted the score. Pavel Datsyuk carried the puck across the blue line and dished to Zetterberg, whose wrister from the middle of the left circle beat Turco low on the glove side a mere 49 seconds into the third period.

Dallas regained the lead on the power play, as Modano parked himself in the high slot and one-timed a feed from Zubov over the glove of Osgood at the 5:35 mark.

Morrow provided some much-needed insurance with 5:26 remaining in third. Similar to Modano's marker, the Dallas captain stationed himself between the circles and snapped a wrister through traffic that found the back of the net.

Detroit had one last chance to make a comeback. With 2:17 to play in regulation, Morrow was called for delay of game after clearing the puck over the glass while in the defensive zone. Detroit pulled Osgood to create a 6- on-4 advantage and hounded Turco, but the Stars netminder was a brick wall. To make matters worse for Dallas, Modano was whistled for hooking with 36 seconds remaining to give the Red Wings a 6-on-3 power play, but the Stars managed to hold on to force Game 5.

With its season on the line, Dallas came out with a surge of energy in the first period, but the Red Wings survived the storm.

Game Notes:

The Stars haven't been swept in the playoffs since the 2001 Conference Semifinals against the St. Louis Blues...Detroit's nine-game winning streak was the longest in the NHL since Montreal won 11 in a row in 1993...The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders are the only NHL teams ever to win a playoff series after dropping the first three games...Dallas finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Red Wings went 0-for-6...Detroit forward Johan Franzen, the leading goal-scorer of the playoffs with 12 tallies, missed his third straight game due to concussion-like symptoms...Dallas forward Jere Lehtinen missed his second consecutive contest because of a leg injury sustained in Game 2.
