Chakvetadze Into Cincinnati Semifinals

Cincinnati, OH -- (Sports Network) - Top-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze gained a spot in the semifinals at the Western & Southern Financial Open after her opponent, sixth seed Elena Vesnina, retired in the third set due to a strained right shoulder.Chakvetadze was ahead, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 4-1 when Vesnina was no longer able to continue. It marked the fourth win in as many career meetings for Chakvetadze against the fellow Russian. The 20-year-old Chakvetadze is off to a sparkling start this year, with two singles titles and consecutive grand slam quarterfinal results. Next up for Chakvetadze will be third seed Sania Mirza of India, as she throttled Olga Govortsova of Belarus, 6-1, 6-1. In other quarterfinal action Friday, seventh seed Akiko Morigami of Japan upended second-seeded Swiss and 2005 titlist Patty Schnyder, 6-3, 6-1 and Uzbekistan qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova defeated American Lilia Osterloh, 6-1, 6-4. Morigami and Amanmuradova will play in Saturday's other semifinal.
