Dehydrated American Wrestler Withdraws

American Wrestler To Make Complete Recovery

POSTED: 4:00 am EDT August 21, 2008

U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier has withdrawn from the Olympics at the 96 kg class due to dehydration.

Cormier was scheduled to compete Thursday morning against Cuba's Michel Batista.

Cormier weighed in for the competition on Wednesday afternoon, at which time he received his draw. Cormier became dehydrated and received treatment from U.S. Olympic Committee medical staff at the Poly Clinic in the Athlete Village and at a local hospital. He has since rehydrated and is expected to have a complete recovery.

Because of the concern for his health, it was decided Cormier would not compete. Because the withdrawal came after the weigh-in, according to international rules, no replacement could be named for Cormier. Hence, Batista advanced by withdrawal, leaving the U.S. without an entry at that weight division.

"Daniel just didn't recover from making his weight yesterday," said U.S. coach Kevin Jackson. "He was dehydrated and he actually started to feel better last night around midnight. We talked to him again this morning, but we determined that he just wouldn't be ready to compete."

Two other Americans didn't make it past the quarterfinals Thursday. Steve Mocco, in the 120kg class, lost to Russian Bakhtiyar Akhmedov, 3-1, on points. Andy Hrovat lost to Cuba's Reineris Salas in the round of 16.

The men's 84kg gold medal match will be between Georgia's Revazi Mindorashvili and Tajikstan's Yusup Abdusalomov. The 96kg title will be decided between Shirvani Muradov of Russia and Kazakhstan's Taimuraz Tigiyev. In the 120kg class, Akhmedov will tangle with Uzbekistan's Artur Taymazov.
