Michigan State Revises Dantonio's Contract

POSTED: 8:42 pm EST December 26, 2008

(Sports Network) - Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio has received a revised contract that will give him a $2 million bonus if he remains with the team through January 2016.

The school announced Friday that the length and base salary of his original deal will remain the same, but the compensation level will increase through supplemental income and a shoe/apparel deal.

Dantonio will also receive a $200,000 annual bonus if he is the school's head coach on June 30 of each given year. Overall, his annual compensation will increase from $1.13 million to $1.8 million.

"It was important to reward Coach Dantonio for what his program has accomplished in two short years," said school athletics director Mark Hollis. "We wanted to ensure continuity and set this football program up for sustained success. The contract revisions certainly help make his total compensation competitive in the Big Ten as well as nationally."

The 9-3 Spartans are slated to play Georgia in the Capital One Bowl on New Year's Day, marking Michigan State's first January 1 bowl in nine years.

"We're so excited about the team's New Year's Day appearance in the Capital One Bowl," Hollis said. "With Coach Dantonio at the helm, the future of Spartan football is in very good hands."

Before becoming the head coach at Michigan State, the 52-year-old Dantonio spent the previous three seasons as head coach at Cincinnati and returned to Michigan State where he served as the secondary coach for six seasons (1995-2000) and added associate head coaching duties to his resume in his last year.

Following his assistant coaching stint at MSU, Dantonio was the defensive coordinator at Ohio State where he won a national title as part of Jim Tressel's coaching staff in 2002.
