Red Wings, Pens Decide Cup Finals In Game 7 At The Joe
(Sports Network) - After two months of playoff hockey the Stanley Cup champion will be decided tonight, as the Detroit Red Wings host the Pittsburgh Penguins in a decisive Game 7 at Joe Louis Arena. The home team is 6-0 so far in the Cup Finals, with Detroit winning Games 1, 2 and 5 in the Motor City and the Penguins taking Games 3, 4 and 6 at Mellon Arena. One of the clubs will break the 3-3 series tie tonight in the finale of the best-of-seven set. The Red Wings beat Pittsburgh in six games during last year's Cup Finals and are trying to become the first team to repeat as champions since they did it themselves in 1997 and '98. Detroit is also aiming for its fifth Stanley Cup in 12 seasons and the franchise's 12th championship overall. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, can win its first Cup since taking back-to-back titles in 1991 and '92. Detroit has been simply outstanding at home in the playoffs, posting an 11-1 record at the Joe in this postseason. The club has won eight straight as the host since dropping Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals against Anaheim on May 3. The Red Wings also posted a 5-0 blowout win over Pittsburgh in last Saturday's Game 5 in Motown. The Penguins are 6-6 as the guest in the postseason, but they made it to the 2009 Cup Finals by closing out their previous three series with road victories. That included a Game 7 triumph in Washington to clinch the Eastern Conference semifinals. Tonight's test marks the 15th Game 7 in Stanley Cup Finals history. Home teams are 12-2 all-time in this situation and a road club hasn't won a decisive Cup Finals game since Montreal took Game 7 in Chicago to win the 1971 championship. "We're confident going back to our home building and playing in front of our own fans, so it will be a fun game going back for Game 7," Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. Pittsburgh staved off elimination with a 2-1 victory in Tuesday's Game 6 encounter at the Igloo. Tyler Kennedy registered the game-winning goal in the third period and added an assist to help the Pens even the series at three games apiece. Jordan Staal also found the back of the net for Pittsburgh, which forced the first Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals since 2006, when the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers. "It's an unbelievable opportunity," Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said. "We weren't thinking about last year at all. But we found a way to survive, that's what we had to do tonight. And now it's anyone's game. And, it's going to be a great challenge. They play great at home but we've got to battle and find a way to pull it off." Marc-Andre Fleury, pulled in Saturday's 5-0 drubbing, was outstanding between the pipes for the Penguins, making 25 saves, including a breakaway opportunity by Dan Cleary in the dying moments of regulation. Kris Draper provided the offense for the Red Wings and Chris Osgood was excellent in net, stopping 29 shots in defeat. "I thought he was real good early," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said of Osgood. "He had to be. In the end, probably Fleury ends up being a bit of a story for them with the way it went in the third period. But both goaltenders gave their team a chance." Osgood has a lifetime 2-3 record in Game 7s. Fleury picked up a victory in his only career Game 7 earlier this postseason when Pittsburgh slammed Washington, 6-2. The Red Wings are 12-7 all-time in Game 7s, while the Pens are 6-4 in this situation. Detroit last played in a decisive game for the Cup in 1964, when it dropped a 4-0 decision in Toronto. This is Pittsburgh's first-ever Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals. This series marks the first time in 25 years that the same two teams have battled for Lord Stanley's Cup in consecutive seasons. The last time was in 1983 and '84 when Edmonton and the New York Islanders faced off against each other. Pittsburgh is also the first team since the 1984 Oilers to return to the Cup Finals a year after losing in that round the previous year. In injury news, Penguins forward Petr Sykora returned to the lineup in Game 6 but suffered a broken bone in his right foot. Sykora was scratched in Pittsburgh's previous 14 postseason contests and will miss tonight's game as well. Sykora, who had 25 goals during the regular season, will likely be replaced by Miroslav Satan in tonight's lineup.
