Red Wings Part Ways With Chelios

POSTED: 12:18 pm EDT June 23, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings will not re-sign veteran defenseman Chris Chelios, ending his nearly decade-long run with the team.

The Detroit News reported that Red Wings general manager Ken Holland met with Chelios on Monday and told him he would not be re-signed. The paper quoted Holland as saying it was "kind of understood" when Chelios signed a one-year deal with the team last year that the 2008-09 season would be his last with the club.

The 47-year-old did not register a point in 28 regular-season games for the Wings in 2008-09. He also went pointless in six postseason contests in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they lost to Pittsburgh in seven games.

Chelios is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, capturing the silver with Montreal in 1986 and with Detroit in 2002 and 2008. Internationally, the bruising backliner has played for USA Hockey four times in the Olympics (1984, 1998, 2002, 2006).

A native of Chicago, Chelios was plucked in the second round by Montreal in the 1981 draft. He spent two seasons with college hockey powerhouse Wisconsin and made his NHL debut with the Canadiens late in the 1983-84 season following the Sarajevo games.

He spent parts of seven seasons with the Habs before moving on to Chicago (1990-99), then Detroit in a March 1999 deal. Over 1,644 games, Chelios has recorded 185 goals, 948 points and 2,891 penalty minutes.
