Spurs Trade For Bucks' Jefferson

POSTED: 10:45 pm EDT June 23, 2009

(Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs acquired forward Richard Jefferson from the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday as part of a three- team deal with the Detroit Pistons also being involved.

The Spurs sent guard Bruce Bowen and forward Kurt Thomas to the Bucks, and also dealt forward Fabricio Oberto to Detroit. The Pistons sent forward Amir Johnson to Milwaukee.

Jefferson, 29, averaged 19.6 points and 4.6 rebounds in 82 games for Milwaukee last season -- his first with the Bucks after they acquired him in a draft-day deal last year.

"We are thrilled to add Richard Jefferson to the Spurs roster. He is a talented, athletic player - in the prime of his career - who can influence the game on both ends of the court. We think he is a great fit for our team," said RC Buford, president of Sports Franchises for Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Jefferson, the 13th overall pick of the 2001 NBA Draft, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the New Jersey Nets. In 571 career games he has posted averages of 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Bowen, Thomas and Oberto played mostly off the bench last season for the Spurs, and are all in the last years of their contracts.

"Trades are often difficult and saying 'bye' to Bruce, Fabricio and Kurt is a tough thing to do. All three of them were valuable contributors to our success as well as good people. We thank each of them for their dedication, professionalism and willingness to always put team first," Buford added.

The 38-year-old Bowen, known as a defensive specialist in his prime, spent the last eight seasons of his 13-year career in San Antonio. In 873 career games for Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and the Spurs, he has averaged 6.1 points, 1.3 assists and nearly one steal per game (0.8).

"The trade we made today provides us with much needed options in both the short and long-term planning for our franchise," said Bucks general manager John Hammond. "We acquired a young, long, athletic forward in Amir Johnson, along with two proven, tough-minded veterans in Bruce Bowen and Kurt Thomas. The trade also provides us with additional opportunities, both now and in the future, to consider adding more pieces to our roster."

Milwaukee will be the seventh stop for Thomas, who has averaged 9.3 points and 7.2 rebounds in 896 career games.

Oberto, who will reportedly be shipped from Milwaukee to Detroit, averaged just 2.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in a decreased role last season -- his fourth in San Antonio.

Johnson, who was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2005 NBA Draft, averaged 3.5 points and 3.7 rebounds in a career-high 14.7 minutes per game last season.
