There's a lot of down time in this job.
Actually, since I know our G.M. reads these, let me put it another way.
When I'm not struggling to shoulder the immense workload of preparing for the 11 p.m. newscast, I use the odd moment of reprieve to scan the internet. I ran across an interesting article about Elizabeth Warren, the financial industry watchdog. It's written by Matt Taibbi -- the angriest and funniest writer you'll come across. He's at trueslant.com/matttaibbi Be advised, some of the language is a tad salty.
p.s. My friend Jack Tany read the post about my odd obsession with Vietnam books. His son bought a Vietnam book at Zaul Library and it was filled with foreign money, including some Vietnamese currency. Interesting.

An apology for my -- at best -- intermittent attention to this blog.
I'll try to do better. Promise.
For some reason I am absolutely fascinated by books on Vietnam.
I've read 'The Best and the Brightest' cover to cover three times. It, by the way, is one of the best books ever written about anything.
I'd also recommend 'A Bright Shining Lie' and 'Making of a Quagmire.'
I've been through biographies on JFK, LBJ, Nixon and McNamara.
Can't seem to get enough, even though I'm unable to put my finger on exactly why.
Right now it's 'Lessons in Disaster' -- the story of McGeorge Bundy, the man who kept advising Kennedy and then Johnson to expand America's role.
He turns out to have almost never been right, and spent the final 40 years of his life trying to understand how it happened; how he and all the other smart guys could have gotten so much so wrong. It's incredibly compelling to me; the notion that you spend decades trying to atone for and ultimately live with the consequences of something you believed in, something you championed, turning out to be one of history's great mistakes.

Please Ben, say it ain't so. Goodness, what to think?
Is she an unstable gold-digger? Is this clean-cut nice guy really a monster? You'll find this a little ridiculous (probably more than a little) but I haven't had a decent night's sleep since this happened -- bothered beyond all reason by the possibility that a guy I've invested my Sunday afternoons in for the past 5 years could be capable of something so coarse and cruel. Steeler fans have always been a bit insufferable about our squeaky-clean reputation. No Pac Man, TO, or Michael Vick for the Rooney family. No Spygate. We do things the right way; the Steeler way. And now this. It's going to be odd trying to cheer for Ben this fall, with all this hanging out there. I honestly don't know how I'll feel about it.
God, I hope these claims are garbage. Truth is, we'll never know for sure

I like the Stafford pick. He's got the tools to be special, no question about it.
The only problem..with the 20th pick, they've GOT to take a tackle. Michael Oher was sitting there, and he would have been perfect. Put him at LT, move Backus to guard, and then you've got the makings of a solid line.
That makes Kevin Smith better, makes Megatron better, and that all makes Stafford better!
Then at the top of round two -- you've got to take the kid from USC -- the linebacker who's name is too hard to spell. The one that looks like Troy Polamolu. Pettigrew's not a terrible choice, but at 20 -- you've got to get the tackle. If Stafford's on his back, it doesn't matter if the tight end is open.

You want to protest the war, fine. Write the President, scream it from the rooftops. But leave these families alone. They've been through plenty already. They've given something profound to this country and suffered unimaginably for it. What about you? What have you done? If you're in Congress, and you voted against the stimulus on principle, nobody should hold that against you. You weighed the pros and cons, considered the evidence, and voted your conscience and your district.
That's exactly as it should be.
But now we're reading stories about members who voted 'no' sending press releases to their constituents, celebrating all the local projects the stimulus will pay for. You inveigh nightly on TV about the evils of the bill, then when it passes over your objections, try to link yourself to the good parts of it? If you voted no on principle, shouldn't principle demand you avoid trying to take any credit whatsoever.
Unless, of course, what you meant to say was "it's a bad bill, full of unnecessary spending -- but only in other districts."
You can't have it both ways.
By the way -- catch 'Frontline' on PBS this week. It's an explanation of the financial meltdown, day by day. In some cases, hour by hour. An extraordinary primer. The thing you'll notice is just how fast everything came undone. And how, to this day, nobody seems absolutely sure they know how to fix it. I got a chuckle the other day from Andy Card. Remember him? He was President Bush's White House Chief of Staff.
Until the President fired him.
Well, Andy's all over the place these days, complaining about what he sees as a breach of West Wing etiquette. Seems the new President has been photographed in the Oval Office WITHOUT A SUIT COAT! He's wearing a shirt and tie - it's not like the new guy shows up for work wearing cut-offs, flip-flops and a baseball cap on backwards. But Andy was so worked up about this, he even went on 'Inside Edition' the other day to express his outrage. Apparently 'The View' was booked up.
Well, look (as Barack Obama himself is fond of saying) I happen to agree that a President shouldn't be photographed in the Oval Office without a suit coat. It's about reverence for the institution. And President Obama himself seems a pretty serious student of history, seems to care about protocol and appearance and the sort. So I'm suprised he let those pictures be taken.
But seriously Andy. We've got two wars, a trillion-dollar deficit, and the worst economy since Hoover. But what gets your goat is Barack Obama failing to wear a suit coat ?

It's pretty clear that, at least in the very early days, President Obama's biggest problem getting anything done in Washington isn't going to be the Republicans. It's going to be his own party. Look at what House Democrats did to the stimulus. 335-million dollars for STD prevention? Money for a 'Mob Museum'? For new sod on the National Mall? Maybe you can make a compelling case for each of these items. Maybe. But what you can't do is justify their place in a massive spending bill sold to the American people as our last best hope for getting the economy moving.
Some of that stuff is going to be dropped from the final version. The President can't go to Republicans with a straight face and say they absolutely, positively have to vote for a bill freighted down with all that pork. The Democrats in the house made their new President look a little silly and unless he finds a way to rein them in, they'll continue to make his job more difficult.

Just talking to Jason Fielder about making NFL picks. Despite a stunning lack of success of my part ( I picked the Lions to win the NFC North last year, and picked them to make the playoffs this year) I'm going to roll the dice again.
NFC
Eagles over NY Giants
Carolina trounces Arizona
AFC
Baltimore lays a thumping on the Titans
Pittsburgh edges SD at home.
Then...
Carolina beats Philly in a rematch of the 2003 NFC title game.
And....kills me to say it, but I think Baltimore's got that look; that Pittsburgh in '05, NYG in '07 look...
So, Baltimore edges the Steelers, giving the black and gold their 6th home loss in an AFC title game.
Ouch..

This is one of those times I wish could write.
Really write; Peggy Noonan-Christopher Hitchens-Mitch Albom write.
If I had their verbal agility, maybe then I could fully express my disgust with some of what I've seen from Congress on the Big Three Loan debate. Such cheap, smarmy chest-thumping. Such demagoguery and hypocrisy.
I haven't talked back to the television this much since the Steelers blew a 10-point lead at home to the Colts a few weeks back. And, while we're at it, enough with the scapegoating of the UAW.
They've made concessions. They're making more. They get it. Perhaps they're not blameless in this, but where's the outrage over the generations of executives and engineers who designed and pushed cars that nobody wanted or, for whatever reason, weren't right for the times? Where's the outrage over their salaries and benefits and pensions? Having lived and worked in the middle of Michigan for close to 30 years, maybe I'm too close to this particular forest to see the trees. Still, being so cavalier about the backbone of America's industrial power, as some in Congress are being right now, seems reckless at best; ignorant and cruel at worst.

After his gracious and patriotic concession speech Tuesday night, it has been suggested all over the intertubes that President-elect Obama extend John McCain more than the obligatory promise of working together in the coming years. One suggestion I really like is this: make Senator McCain the Secretary of Homeland Security. It would no doubt appeal to McCain's love of America and desire to protect her, and it would send the right kind of signal to the country after a bruising campaign.
Thoughts?

There are, as of this writing, 11 days until we choose a President. The campaign has been riveting, historic and often quite amusing.
It has also been long. Unbelievably, unimaginably, unbearably long. And on more than once occasion, a little tense. I've witnessed and participated in more passionate discussions about this race than any in my lifetime.
I'm exhausted. I can't wait until it's over.

Wow -- Scot Johnson made a great point on the air, the night the Lions canned Matt Millen.
If the Lions had held on to beat Green Bay two weeks ago, instead of once again collapsing down the stretch, maybe the glow from a dramatic comeback victory would have been enough to keep Millen around for another few weeks.
Interesting. Maybe it just would have delayed the inevitable for a few more weeks.

Tom Brady's done for the year. Now we'll see whether the magic they've been weaving in Foxboro since 2001 has largely been the work of him or Belichick. They'll still be good; a nice, solid 11-5, 12-4 -- but hard to see them going deep in the playoffs now. For one thing -- who's afraid of them now?
That Lions defense seemed, I don't know, uninspired? Unprepared? Disinterested?
That offense is good enough to go 9-7. But only if the other side of the ball actually looks like it wants to tackle people. Michael Turner's a nice back, but they made him look otherworldly.
Lamarr Woodley is a man. He almost broke Matt Schaub in half on a first-half sack. Then he added an interception and a fumble recovery. Cool to see the local guy busting out like that. Especially wearing Black and Gold.

Thanks for the feedback on my recent commentary about Barack Obama, and the cancelled visit to the military hospital in Germany.
To those who thought I was being too harsh, let me point out that we always gets accused of being 'in the tank' for one candidate or another. Last summer, I opined about the exit of Karl Rove and the damage I thought his style of politics had done the process. Got about a gazillion complaints on that one.
This time, my point was that Obama blew a chance to do the right thing, and look good doing it, by passing on the visit. Some of you didn't like that. So...if both sides of the spectrum are occasionally upset by what we're doing...maybe we're striking the right balance.

As I write this, Jim Kramer and Barb Sheltraw from KCQ 98.1 are sitting off to my right here in the TV5 studios, getting ready to be interviewed 'Live' on the air about the big County Music Festival.
We had to move the timing of their appearance -- and they've been very gracious about waiting. If you're headed out to the show, enjoy!
Also -- I recently got a chance to briefly meet Barack Obama. We were ushered in for a quick -- and I do mean quick -- interview during his appearance in Flint.
Quick first impression -- very calm, very easygoing.
Same with John McCain, whom I met him last fall up on Mackinac Island; very serene. And that's when nobody gave him a chance to win the nomination. Lots of politicians try way too hard to make you like them -- the too-tight handshake, the leaning in as though they can't possibly wait to hear what you'll say next. Neither of these guys did that.
So, no matter what happens this fall, I am now on an almost-first name basis with the next leader of the free world. Cool.

Regardless of how you feel about his candidacy -- we all saw a pretty amazing American moment the other night, when Barack Obama claimed the Democratic nomination and rewrote the history books.

As I write this during Monday's 11pm newscast, the Pistons look very sharp.
If their next series is Boston, that'll be fun - like the late 80's all over again. Remember when the Celtics were the team the Pistons just couldn't get past in the playoffs -- then they finally did. What was that, '87 or '88?
The Tigers, meanwhile, look like a team that believed the hype. Jim Leyland's a genius, but tinkering around the edges with that lineup may not be enough.
They look old, slow, and lethargic. Speaking of which -- Darrin's wrapping up his weather and coming back to the set.
Gotta go.

I'm writing this during the 11 pm news on Wednesday 4/16. I'm watching Scot's sports highlights, and wondering just who is this Rodney Stuckey?! That guy can flat play. The Pistons have got to find a way to get him more minutes.
And, it looks like the Tigers are finally beginning to awake from their long winter's nap.
Now if only someone could have awakened Barack Obama before Wednesday's debate. He looked tired and listless and just couldn't seem to get it going. Perhaps he's as tired of these things (21 debates so far, with at least one more to come) as the rest of us.
It feels like this campaign actually started 15 years, not months, ago.

I say let the Democrats keep fighting. Let Hillary Clinton campaign as long as she wants, and as long as her money and support hold out.
What's the rush?
This notion that she's weakening Obama and tearing apart the party, I just don't buy. If anything, this is going to toughen Obama up -- and, by the way, if Democrats think this is harsh, just wait until the Republicans get a hold of Obama this summer. If they really want to make Obama look bad, just show that video of him from the bowling alley.
My goodness, that was pretty sad. A 37? I think you get a 37 for just lacing up your shoes.

The doctor told me to stop running, but I'm getting back on the treadmill as soon as I can. I can't stand the thought of not being able to run anymore. Feels old.
Anyway, it did give me my first encounter with Vicadin. We could become big friends. I'm glad the doctor only prescribed a limited amount.

The answer is yes -- we're breaking in some new equipment, and we haven't got all the bug ironed out just yet. Nothing serious, just a few bumps in the road. We'll have it straightened out soon. But in the meantime, thanks so much for your patience and your continued loyal viewership. It is greatly appreciated!
I was fascinated by that Democratic debate Monday in South Carolina. Kind of uncomfortable at times, seeing Obama and Clinton's mutual contempt -- usually so well-cloaked -- come bubbling to the surface. I used to think the eventual winner would have no choice but to put the other on the ticket with them. Now I'm not so sure.
Whatever else you want to say about them, Bill and Hill are not to be trifled with. They're like Sean Connery in The Untouchables; "..they pull a knife, you pull a gun. They send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue! " They play for keeps. Can Obama? And if he does, will he still be the guy a lot of people fell in love with? Most interesting Presidential race of my lifetime, hands down.

Back from one vacation and ready for another!
Hope you all had a very happy holiday season -- with plenty of rest, relaxation and time with loved ones.
I was back in town last Thursday night, in time for the Iowa Caucuses. Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, that speech by Obama was something to see. It was staged, if that's the right word, in an interesting way. He was the only one who used a teleprompter, and he was the only one on the stage by himself. The other candidates showed up surrounded by friends and campaign staff, and were just kind of winging it on their remarks. But Obama's speech was crafted, and very well produced. A very deliberate attempt to make him look different from the others -- and to make him look Presidential.
Even if you disagree with his politics, it's hard not to acknowledge his oratorical gifts.

We'll talk again soon...

Whatever you think of the guy's politics, Barack Obama has himself some cute kids. And, whatever you think of his politics, John McCain has done a nice job of making this a race again.
Also -- Hillary die-hards, we get it already. You think your lady got a raw deal. Message received.
As I write this, Mrs. Clinton is preparing to address the convention. It'll be endlessly fascinating, and endlessly remarked upon, to see how much enthusiasm she musters up for the guy who may have ended her chances of ever being President.

Good Grief, is the Brett Favre drama resolved yet?
I'm pretty sick of the whole thing. Dude, make up your mind. Stick with it. And don't keep calling the Packers all winter and spring playing Hamlet. Enough.
Now...

It was hard not to be moved watching that; especially his brief and heartfelt homage to his grandmother in Hawaii. Again, irrespective of your political leanings -- history is history. And what we witnessed was, by any definition, historic.

Gotta go.
See you next time.

Just had surgery on my left knee and let me tell you, I don't recommend it. The doc went in and cleaned up some torn meniscus and it's already feeling better. But still, hobbling around on one leg is no way to negotiate an icy sidewalk. It took me forever to get anywhere.

We've gotten some calls and e-mails, wondering if anything is different over here at the station.

We'll talk next time.
