Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I cannot believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner! This afternoon, my mother was talking about heading to the grocery store to buy a turkey. She promised she would buy a big one because I LOVE turkey. It ranks right up there with cookies & cream ice cream, chocolate and the TV show, “Monk.”

Anyhow, my mother said she better go to the store before Saturday because everyone will probably be shopping for a bird this weekend. I said, "Why? When is Thanksgiving?" She replied, "A week from today." Well, I have to work on Thanksgiving, so I guess I didn’t realize it was coming so soon. But, Thanksgiving being a week away means the start of the holiday season is almost here. One of my favorite things about this time of year – PRIDE in Saginaw's Holidays in the Heart of the City festivities. In the past, I've had the opportunity to attend the lighting ceremony, which is a blast! I look forward to seeing the city all lit up this Friday night. That definitely puts me in the holiday spirit! And, the parade on Saturday will be exciting as always. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I hope you’re enjoying the heat! It’s finally SUMMER!

I wanted to update you about the Emmy Awards. Unfortunately, I didn’t win, but I had a blast! This year, like in the past, I had the opportunity to present awards. I was thrilled to be paired up with my buddy, Meteorologist Chris Gloninger.

I have a couple of shots from Emmy night to share with you.

In both, I’m at the podium. But, in one of the pictures you see Chris walking to get the Emmy from the model who was assisting us. We had a fun time! This year, the ceremony was held at Motor City Casino. It was a perfect venue!

On a sad note, I have to say how upset I am about the passing of Michael Jackson! I know people have varying opinions about him, but no one can deny he was a phenomenal performer! He was second to none when it came to singing and dancing.

I was so shocked when CBS News broke into our 6 PM newscast and I saw “Michael Jackson Dead” on the screen. I really thought I was going to break down crying, but I knew Katie and I would be back on camera any minute. It is a little strange to be so emotional about someone I never met, but Michael’s songs are the soundtrack of my life.

I grew up with a huge crush on him. I had a poster of him taped to my bedroom door for ages! I even had a hot pink belt with a buckle like the buckles on airplane seatbelts, just smaller. The belt said “I (heart symbol) Michael Jackson” all the way around it. I used to be so excited when I’d hear he had a new video coming out. Each premiere was a major television event to me. And, I was so happy my parents let me stay up late to watch the mini-series, “The Jacksons: An American Dream.” I’ll definitely miss Michael Jackson, but his fans will keep his memory alive and the music playing!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I am truly in a state of shock. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences - Michigan Chapter has nominated me for three Emmy Awards. The stories that were nominated are "Bea's Birthday: Celebrating 111 Years," "Justin's Journey," and "Painful Practices."

Bea’s Birthday

I am so thankful I had the opportunity to celebrate Bea Cooper's 111th birthday with her and her family last year. At that time, she was the 50th oldest person in the world! Prior to her reaching 111, Shawn Jenkins, a TV5 producer, read about Mrs. Cooper and was determined to track her down. Shawn wanted to see if we could interview her. Mrs. Cooper ended up inviting us to her birthday party!

My photographer, Zara Maldonado, and I enjoyed spending our afternoon at the party in Harbor Beach. Based on the great turnout, it was clear Mrs. Cooper was loved. If you watched my report, you know she was friendly, funny and kind. Mrs. Cooper actually sent a note to the station thanking me and Zara for attending her party! Unfortunately, she passed away earlier this month. I know she will be missed.

Justin’s Journey

This story was about Gladwin County teen Justin Fink who battled cancer as a child and now dreams of competing in the Junior Iditarod and Junior Yukon Quest. The sled dog races in Alaska are extremely challenging. Photographer Jeff Jenkins and I met Justin and his family one cold morning to witness the training firsthand. It was wonderful to see the Finks working together to help Justin reach his goal. Jeff and I also had a blast meeting the dogs that had their own distinct personalities. By the way, Jeff nearly froze jumping in and out of the TV5 SUV trying to get the perfect shots of the dogs speeding down the trails. I think it was worth it, based on the awesome video Jeff had by the end of the day.

Unfortunately, Justin couldn’t raise enough money to make the trip to Alaska earlier this year, but I know he’ll get there! Right now, the Finks are working on organizing a sled dog race in Gladwin County! I’ll keep you posted about that.

Painful Practices

Are you familiar with medical mesh? I wasn’t until Sheri Wonch, who lives in Saginaw County, contacted me one day. She told me about the excruciating pain she endures daily. Sheri believes this is a result of having mesh inserted in her body to repair her hernia. Doctors say the material is thought to be safe in most cases. That’s why Sheri tried nerve blocks and even decided to have a hysterectomy. She thought maybe it wasn’t the mesh that was preventing her from walking or even sitting comfortably. But, once the surgery was over and doctors didn’t find anything significantly wrong with her uterus, Sheri was convinced it was the mesh. She found a new doctor who is willing to take her case and possibly remove the mesh. I hope she finds relief soon!

I want to thank Mrs. Cooper, Justin and Sheri for sharing their stories with me and TV5. I also have to thank my photographers/editors for their hard work. Zara, Jeff, Ray Larkin and Tom Schmidt, you guys rock! That’s all for now!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I wanted to type a quick note to thank you – our viewers – for your support. Somehow, someway I was selected as Best TV Personality by the readers of Tri City Magazine. A few of my talented colleagues also made the “Best of the Tri-Cities” list in the April 2009 edition. Congrats!

If my parents lived up here, I would bet money they filled out a ton of ballots. But, since they live in Metro Detroit, TV5 viewers must be responsible. So, thank you very much for thinking of me, voting and watching. I would also like to thank Tri City Magazine Senior Designer Alayna Partaka and Photographer Avram Golden for coming to the studio to take my picture. You are awesome!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

Thanks for continuing to watch TV5 News! You may have noticed that on MY5 News at 4 we’ve started a new segment. It’s called, “Family Matters.” Every Friday, Psychotherapist Thomas Haller answers your questions about family, parenting and relationship issues. We’ve received some great questions. Thanks to all of you who have been courageous enough to email Mr. Haller. Some of our viewers may be struggling with the same challenges. So, the response to your question may change more lives than just yours.

On January 30, Mr. Haller gave his advice to a lady who is wondering whether her boyfriend loves her. Another viewer had a question about job hunting in this tough economy. These are two issues to which many of us in Mid-Michigan and across the country can relate. If you want to contact Psychotherapist Thomas Haller, just go to wnem.com, scroll down to WNEM Extras and click on “Family Matters.” You may hear the answer on MY5 News at 4 (Fridays), Newsradio 1250 (Fridays), or TV5 (weekends).

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

Many of you have contacted me requesting more information on my story, “Painful Practices.” The I-Team report aired last month. I was surprised by the overwhelming response to the segment. So many people in Mid-Michigan and beyond can relate to Sheri.

This summer, Sheri contacted me and revealed that she lives in agony. She attributes it to the medical mesh used in her hernia surgery. For more than two years, Sheri has tried different techniques and medications to relieve her pain. Nothing has worked. Finding a doctor who will completely remove the material has also proven challenging. She has an appointment next month with a new physician who may be able to help.

I passed on to Sheri the contact information of the viewers who called or e-mailed me. But, she now has a website which will allow you to reach her directly. You can also learn more about her struggles. Here’s the link: medicalmeshofmichigan.webs.com.

I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I thought I would update you on my goddaughters. Gianna is four years old and living in the Miami area. Brooklyn is 20 months old and lives in Metro Detroit. They are two of the best little girls you could ever meet!

Miss Brooklyn is growing up so fast! She is running at lightning speed, feeding herself (including grabbing bacon off my plate), very assertive and hilarious! I can still remember when I was afraid to hold her because she was so little.

Brooklyn Playing Dress Up
Brooklyn Playing Dress Up

Now, if I don’t hold her, I can barely keep up with her! Recently, I was flipping stations and came across the National Geographic channel. Gorgeous white lions were on the screen, so Brooklyn went running to the TV to check them out. She was so amused! About ten times, she ran to me then ran back to the TV as the lions marched through their habitat. Then out of nowhere, at least five wildebeests came charging toward the screen. Brooklyn—who at that moment was glued to the TV—came flying over to me for protection. It was so cute and a little funny because she ran so fast! But, I was a little concerned I traumatized her. I need to see if she’s willing to hang out with me anymore. Anyhow, Brooklyn is such a pretty little lady. In her photo, she’s all dolled up in a lacy dress and pearls.

Gianna turned four in August, but she’s already making plans for her fifth birthday. On the phone recently, she invited me to her next birthday party. She said, “You know, I’ll be five.” I assured her that I was keeping up with the national holidays that are her birthdays. Then she told me if I come, I’ll need to bake a cake for her.

Gianna The News Anchor
Gianna The News Anchor
Anyone who knows me (including her mother) knows that as much as I would like to be B. Smith or Martha Stewart, I’m not. Anyhow, I told her she can help me make the cake. That seemed to be an acceptable response, so I’m off the hook for now. I’m sure to lose points with her if I bake a disgusting cake.Hopefully, if I buy her a nice toy or a dress (she likes dresses), she’ll forget all about her request.

In her photo, Gianna has on her serious face. She’s sitting behind the anchor desk at the NBC affiliate in Miami.

That’s all for now.

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

Late last month, I had the opportunity to serve as mistress of ceremonies for a wonderful event in Flint. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan unveiled its Thomas Landaal Food Recovery Center.

Landaal was a well-loved Flint-area businessman and community activist who served on the Food Bank's board for about 20 years. He passed away in December. Since this spring, people across Genesee County—and beyond—have been raising money in Landaal's honor.

The Landaal Food Recovery Center is refrigerated, making it possible to now store larger quantities of perishable food. As a result, through its community partnerships, the Food Bank expects to be able to provide more than a million pounds of food over the next year. Donations are still being accepted. By the way, I met Mr. Landaal’s family and friends. I got the impression he was an awesome guy. And, he is certainly missed.

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

TV5 Assistant News Director Matt Borek just reminded me I haven’t blogged in ages! So, let me share my latest dilemma.

I have been working so hard to convince my friends to go see a New Kids On The Block concert with me. The guys are on tour again – thank goodness! But, much to my surprise, no one wants to go! I’m not joking; I’m seriously SHOCKED!

My father and I camped outside of Joe Louis Arena to get good seats to a New Kids concert back in the day. (I know – my dad is a real trooper!) The group sold millions of albums, so I know someone loved NKOTB as much as me. But, apparently, no one I know…not my old producer Stef, not my friend Aquilla, no one! Turns out – my best friend, Jenny, who went with me to the concert at the Joe only did it out of love for me, not out of love for NKOTB! Who knew?!

Although I have outgrown my crush on Jordan Knight (I’ve moved on to John Legend and Morris Chestnut), I still remember his birthday and favorite song! I’m not sure why I admitted that. And, I will never forget that NKOTB concert at the Joe. Do you have any fond memories of New Kids On The Block? If so, drop me a line and let me know!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I’m getting ready to head to Gladwin for “Our Town” on Thursday. The Gladwin County Carriage Festival begins this Friday. So, I’ll give you a sneak peek at the festivities. I’ll be reporting from the fairgrounds live beginning at 4 PM on MY5 and from 5-6:30 PM on TV5.

Speaking of reporting, I had the chance to meet Senator Barack Obama in Lansing Monday. It was his birthday, so that was pretty cool! I covered his speech on our economy and energy. Afterward, I interviewed him briefly and shook his hand. I was actually quite excited about that! I couldn’t believe I had the opportunity to speak with one of the men who could be our next president! Is that silly, since my job is to interview people from all walks of life? We’ll see if I get to interview Senator John McCain the next time he heads to Michigan. He was here Tuesday. If I can speak with him, I’ll be two-for-two!

By the way, I had a few days off recently. My bosses were nice enough to let me head to Orlando, Florida for my sorority convention. Thanks Al, Ian and Matt! I am proud to be a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. So, I was extremely excited when our 23rd National President, Dr. Louise Rice, called me. She selected me to participate in two special ceremonies. That was quite an honor! Dr. Rice is a wonderful, classy, intelligent lady. I’m happy to know her. Our newly elected president, Cynthia Butler-McIntyre, is a dynamic lady who will continue leading our sorority in the right direction!

Well, that’s all for now. Thanks for clicking on my blog!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

I hope you enjoyed your Fourth of July weekend! The weather was perfect for all of the holiday festivities. I worked on Friday, but I spent the rest of the weekend with my family. We had a great time!

Enough about me, if you’ve been watching TV5 News at 10 PM on FOX 66, you’ve noticed that Bill Walsh has joined me at the anchor desk. I will miss Sam who will now be able to focus more of his attention on our 11 PM news. But, Bill and I have fun working together. As you know, we anchor MY5 News at 4 PM. We hope you will continue to welcome us into your homes at 4 and 10.

By the way, if you’re not home by 4 PM, you can always watch the 4 o’clock news by logging on: http://www.wnem.com/my5news/index.html

Hello, Mid-Michigan!

In my last blog, I wrote about the Tri-City Links’ Salute to Fathers event. Well, it was a success! We had nearly 130 people in attendance.

I truly appreciate the help of my committee, the chapter and my parents. Their assistance resulted in everything going smoothly. Thank you!

The student who wrote the winning essay is Delmar Lee. He is a student at South Middle School. Delmar wrote about the sacrifices his father has made for his family and his country.

Congratulations to Delmar and his dad! Corporal Rickie Lee, Sr. is the 2008 Tri-City Links – Father of the Year! While serving in Iraq, Corporal Lee’s Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb. A close friend of his was killed.

This weekend, a very important conference will take place. The American Heart Association,

Saginaw Black Nurses Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. - Saginaw Alumnae Chapter present, "Go Red For Your Heart & Soul and Power To End Stroke Health Event."

It’s for women who want to gain a fresh perspective on life, and become empowered to take positive action to reduce their risks of heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women.

The event takes place on Saturday, April 12, 2008, from 8 AM until 2 PM at Buena Vista High School. The address is 3945 E. Holland Road, Saginaw, MI 48601.

The day's agenda includes presentations from local health professionals on heart disease and stroke among women, congestive heart failure, and sickle cell anemia. Free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, educational materials, and a heart-healthy lunch will also be offered to attendees.

The cost to attend the conference is $10 per person, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

I will be there along with members of my sorority. This is a great opportunity to get important information that could save your life or the life of someone you love! I hope to see you there! Take care!

Monday afternoon, I arrived back in Mid-Michigan and learned about Wally Bronner’s diagnosis.

To know Wally is to love him. Whenever you see him, he greets you with a warm hug, a kind word, and a smile. Every year, I look forward to the MDA Labor Day Telethon. One of the reasons – I know Wally will bring out his props and use his colorful message to motivate viewers to give.

He's very effective, if you ask me. Who could say 'no' to Wally?

He and the entire Bronner family are in my prayers. Take care!

I have been trying to figure out what I should write about in my blog. It finally hit me!

I need to do a little bragging. I’m a proud godmother! My goddaughter, Brooklyn, is walking! She is an adorable little girl with lots of personality. She’s always smiling, talking, and making cute little expressions.

Brooklyn turned one last week. Her parents, La Tasha and Saul, had a wonderful party for her. She definitely enjoyed being the star of the show! Brook sees the camera flash and stops in her tracks, waiting for her next photo op.

Trust me, if you met her, you’d want to hug her and never let her go! I have tried to do that, but now that Brooklyn’s walking, I guess I’ll have to respect her newfound independence.

Take care!

February 12th, I had the chance to visit Albee Elementary School in Burt. The students from Brady Elementary were also there. Mrs. Brenda Vinson, who teaches at Albee, invited me to participate in the Black History Month celebration.

I spoke about African-American women who were trailblazers in the field of journalism. Historian Carol Walker discussed black inventors, and musician Kevin Collins taught African drumming and dance. The students were delightful and asked great questions. There were definitely some investigative reporters in the bunch!

I truly enjoyed meeting everyone from Albee and Brady. Thanks to Mrs. Vinson, the principals, teachers, and parent groups at both schools! Here’s a photo with Mrs. Vinson (Albee) and Mrs. Wightman’s (Brady) students, as well as Carol Walker.

Hello, Mid-Michigan! I’m sure you’ve noticed we’re making a lot of changes at TV5.

Some of you have asked me about errors that have occurred in the newscasts. Here’s my attempt at an explanation, and I am only speaking for myself – not for the station. We’re updating the technology we use to produce our newscasts.

That means all of us behind the scenes and in front of the camera are learning how to do our jobs a little differently, which takes time. We’re all working hard to get adjusted to the new system. And, in the last week, I’ve noticed a vast improvement. We want to continue providing you with informative broadcasts that are easy to watch. So, trust me, the newscasts will get better. Thanks for your patience!

Another change I want to share with you is our new “MY5 News at 4,” which starts Thursday, January 31st at – you guessed it – 4 PM. It’s a five-minute newscast that will give you the latest weather and news headlines of the day. Tune in to get a sneak peek at what you’ll see at 5, 5:30 and 6 PM.

So, join me, Darrin, and Cindy beginning at 4 on MY5!

Take care!

Hello, Mid-Michigan! Happy New Year!

This is my first blog. Since I’ve worked here at TV5, blogs have become quite popular. I have been reluctant to start one for a couple of reasons.

1. I’m an extremely private person, which may seem odd considering my profession.
2. I can’t imagine I have anything that fascinating to say that you would want to read every week or two.

However, my general manager, who is a very charming man (truly!), has convinced me someone will read my blog. I hope he’s right. If not, I’ll just get my parents to log on a couple of times a day. So, here’s the plan. I will try not to bore you. I will keep it short and sweet (with the exception of this blog). And, if you have anything you’d like to ask me, send me an e-mail. I’ll try to answer your questions in my blog.

I do want to take a moment to thank all of you for watching. I am now co-anchoring TV5 News at 5:30 with Katie. Then at 10 PM, Sam and I anchor the news on FOX 66. After three years of anchoring Wake-Up and TV5 News at Noon, I know it’s odd to see me at night. Some of you have told me, you are trying to adapt. I appreciate your support.

I am the mistress of ceremonies for the “In the Spirit of Unity & Service: 2008 Regional Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

This important event will take place on Monday, January 21st at 7:15 a.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bay City. I hope some of you are planning to attend!

If you’ve read this far – thanks! Take care!
