With a name like da Vinci, you might expect a masterpiece.

In fact, the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System is a lot like the fifteenth century Renaissance Man. The da Vinci Surgical System in use at St. Mary’s of Michigan creates its own masterpieces…in the operating room.

Since it was first acquired, hundreds of people have had prostate removal surgery through the da Vinci. It enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. The minimally invasive technique means less blood loss, a quicker recovery time, and a faster return to normal daily activities.

The use of robotic surgery is now expanding to include gynecological procedures, such as hysterectomies. Close to a dozen have now been performed and more doctors are being trained on the use of the da Vinci. One of those who has become proficient on the system is Dr. James Hines.

“I think this is the wave of the future,” says Dr. Hines. “The robot is faster, safer, we see less blood loss and more control. Patients are up and about the next day.”

Prostatectomies and hysterectomies are just the beginning. The possibility exists for other surgeries to be performed by using robotic surgery as well.

“We are seeing this spread throughout the United States and eventually the world,” says Dr. Hines. “I think we are going to se this used more and more.”
