Vandals Strike Bay City Park

Posted: Updated:

Flint, Michigan (WNEM) - Bay City park officials have a mess on their hands at this hour. Someone dumped paint all over an observation deck at a city park. The structure overlooks the Saginaw River.

Sources tell TV-5 they saw two youngsters apparently connected to the vandalism shortly after it happened early Monday morning. In other words it took place on Memorial Day at Veterans Memorial Park on a day set aside to remember those who paid the ultimate price. But now taxpayers will pay the price to clean up the mess.

Some teenagers who had just finished doing some volunteer works sprucing up the nearby Santa House took a walk to the vandalized deck this morning. Morgan Heideman is a student at Arenac Eastern High School. She told WNEM TV-5 "why would someone do this? It's already painted...there's no point. " Tyler Nadolski is a senior at Bay City Central High School.   He said "I thought this was very disrespectful, that taxpayers money didn't go towards anything, just for someone just to ruin a great piece of landmark."

Another teen says this type of vandalism gives a bad name to all young people in the area. According to Nicholas Poppe the vandalism "kind of puts more bad image on our stereotype, because now everyone will come and say 'oh, look at the teenagers that did this, and that gives the whole bad image here in Bay City.'"

City officials didn't know about the vandalism until we notified them. Deputy City Manager Steven Black told WNEM TV-5 crews will have to either power wash the mess or paint over it.

Meanwhile Morgan Heideman said she wouldn't mind volunteering to help restore the deck back to it's original state. "If I got the chance to, I'm sure I could." City officials didn't have a time frame for when they'll be able to clean up the vandalism.
