Kettering University Makes 'Reductions' To Staff 6-01-2010

More Mid-Michigan residents will be headed to the unemployment line after a local university handed out pink slips.
While Kettering University will not give specifics, employees told WNEM TV5 several dozen workers have been impacted by the move.
The news traveled fast around campus Tuesday. “They laid off, like, 40 people,” said one student who spoke with TV5’s Tia Ewang. “If the school goes under, it kind of discredits my degree.”
TV5 attempted to get an on-camera interview from Kettering University officials, but they declined and released this statement:
"The university will not share specifics on what happened, but they do regret the reduction. Because of the economic situation in the state we must balance the 2010-2011 budget."
One of the employees who was let go was willing to speak with TV5. James Godwin said he had worked at the university for more than 20 years.
Godwin said he understands enrollment numbers are down, but it was the way the university fired him that was upsetting.
“Everyone has a general idea that enrollment is going down,” said Godwin. He said he was given just minutes to collect his things and get out the door.
Kettering employees told TV5 the number of workers given pink slips is higher than 20 and former employees said they never saw it coming.
Kettering will not confirm any of the termination figures, but TV5 has learned the fired employees were handed a box, read a script of procedures, were walked out the door and asked to leave campus.
Employees who were laid off said they were surprised the firings came at a time when they had heard university president, Dr. Stan Liberty, had recently received a raise.
Kettering said the claims of Liberty’s raise are untrue.
“The president’s salary didn’t change, but the IRS 990 Reporting System did,” said Patricia Mroczek, a Kettering public relations person. “It makes it look like there’s a change in his pay.”
Students said they’re worried with all that’s going on.
“Kettering has an automotive focus and the automotive industry right now is having such a hard time,” said another student. “I think that’s the biggest factor.”
