Local Vietnam Veteran Receives High Honors 6-03-2010

An overdue award ceremony for a local Veteran was held in Saginaw Thursday.
U.S. Rep. Dave Camp was on hand to present Marine Corps. Veteran Sgt. Udell Holmes with nearly one dozen service medals and commendations for his services in Vietnam.
Some of medals and ribbons include:
  • Combat Action Ribbon for Service in Vietnam
  • Presidential Unit Citation - Awarded to 3d Marine Division
  • Good Conduct Medal
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze campaign star
  • Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation
  • Rifle Marksman Badge
  • Pistol Sharpshooter Badge

Holmes served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964-1967.
Following his discharged, Holmes worked as a police officer for Saginaw and Buena Vista Township, and then retired from security work with General Motors.
Holmes told WNEM TV5 he's saving the medals for his child and his grandchildren.
