Midland Couple Fights For Custody Of Grandkids 6-03-2010

One Midland couple is fighting to free their grandchildren from the Florida foster care system, but they’ve been told their house just isn’t big enough.
Now time and money is running out for Dan and Mary Spegel, who have a hole in their yard, and one in their hearts.
In order to adopt them, the Spegels have to put an addition on their house. The three grandchildren are currently in the Florida foster care system and Mary talks to them over the phone a few times a week.

She said the kids have a lot of questions. “They say “grandma I thought you were coming to get me,”” said Spegel.
Time is running out for the Spegels to finish the addition. They need to add two bedrooms and a bathroom. The project needs to be complete by the end of June. If it isn’t finished, the kids could be adopted by another family.
“We’re stuck, we don’t know where to go or what to do,” said Spegel.
The Spegels can’t pay for the extra space because they are filing for bankruptcy.
Mary Spegel was diagnosed with cancer in 2007. She is in remission now but the couples’ finances are destroyed.
The grandparents are hoping someone will step up to help them finish the addition.
“It has to be able to happen, it just has to,” said Spegel. “We have no choice.”
If you're a contractor or a builder, the Spegels are asking for your help.
Anyone wishing to make a cash or check donation (must designate on check Spegel Adoption) can do so by calling 989-837-9757 or making them payable to Caregiving Network, and mailing them to 607 Gordon Street, Midland, Mich. 48640. All donations are tax deductible.
The Spegel family said they are still looking for the following items to help them in their quest to adopt their grandchildren: 4 joists An electrician A heating/cooling person People with trucks that can pick up and deliver supplies Clothing for the children Furniture Monetary donations
