Saginaw Seeks Input In Safety Director Search 6-08-2010

City leaders in Saginaw are warning that if voters approve a special millage for public safety funding, the city would still face a large budget deficit.
City Manager Darnell Early also updated City Council on his search for a public safety director Monday night.
That person would be tasked with revamping the police and fire departments to cut costs.
“We are a ways away from making any final determinations about cross-training police and fire personnel, let me make that very clear,” said Early. “But that certainly is an option we want to explore and we think that option is best explored by a public safety professional who is aware of the nuances of implementing such a system.”
Early told WNEM TV5 he hopes to hire someone to fill the position by September. Before that decision is made, however, Early is seeking the public’s input on potential candidates.
A focus group will meet at the Bethel AME Church on Cathay Street at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
