Man Competent For Trial In Boy's Beating Death 6-08-2010

State psychiatrists said the man accused of beating a 4-year-old boy to death is competent to stand trial, but his attorney disagrees.
A competency hearing was held Tuesday morning for 24-year-old Brandon Hayes.
His attorney said he intends to request an independent evaluation.
Hayes is charged with torture and first-degree murder in the death of Dominick Calhoun, who died April 12.
Calhoun’s mother, 25-year-old Corrine Baker, is facing second-degree murder charges associated with the child’s beating death.
Authorities said Hayes attacked the boy for days after he wet his pants.
Pickell said a neighbor heard the boy yelling, “Mommy, make it stop.”
Investigators said Baker did nothing to stop the beating and told police she was afraid to report the abuse.
Police said Baker thought if she had reported the abuse, she would be charged with violating her probation on drug charges.
