Nexteer-UAW Deal To Make 320 Temps Full Time 6-08-2010

A new deal is on the table for United Auto Workers at Nexteer in Saginaw County.
If approved, it is expected to create hundreds of new jobs and turn hundreds more jobs into full-time work.
Most of the employees at Nexteer’s plant are just learning of the deal themselves and some won’t get official word of it until Wednesday.
Soon, UAW members are expected to vote on a new five year labor contract.
The agreement will turn 320 part-time jobs into full-time jobs and bring in 200 new jobs to the plant within the next year.
It would be the first time in 10 years that new jobs and new work would be coming into the Nexteer complex.
The new agreement would also give Nexteer more flexibility to bid for new work outside of its contracts with General Motors and give the facility a new working contract so that if the plant sells, it will already have a working five-year contact in place.
Local 699 union officials said the new contract could give the plant new life.
“We’re actually putting programs in there,” said Troy Newberry, president of Local 699. “We got more work coming back, and we’re going to be hiring people -- hopefully real shortly.”
Voting on the new contract is expected to wrap up within the next few weeks.
