Genesee Twp Set To Layoff 6 Full-Time Officers 6-09-2010

Genesee Township officials said they can’t afford to keep six full-time police officers on the force any longer and plan to make the staff reductions official on Thursday.
The layoffs were originally slated for mid-May, but township officials and police union leaders agreed to rescind the cuts in hopes to find other ways to curb a $431,000 budget shortfall.
During a township meeting Tuesday night, board members decided they couldn’t hold out any longer and announced the officer cuts would take effect amidst its funding crisis.
"Officers were asked to make concessions,” said Police Officers Union president Matthew Allen. “Union members were able to make cuts. When they presented them to the township, they were denied. Then the layoffs came."
The department will now be equipped with 11 full-time patrol officers and 5 part-time officers.
Voters rejected an $84 township-wide assessment for police and fire on May 4.
Both sides said they plan to continue negations.
Residents told WNEM TV5 that they are concerned because the township borders the north and east sides of Flint. They want to make sure crime does not spill over from the city.
