Recall Petition Against Area Sheriff Approved 6-09-2010

A recall petition against Saginaw County Sheriff Bill Federspiel has been approved.
Now the man who filed it has 180 days to collect over 21,000 signatures to put the recall on the November ballot.
David Smith, a Saginaw County resident, claims the sheriff is violating the law by driving a seized Ford Mustang for things other than official business.
Federspiel denies the claim.
He said he is taking the recall effort seriously, but at the same time said he thinks the savings to county taxpayers by the Sheriff’s Department using the Mustang far outweigh anything else.
“[The car] is an educational tool for everyone not to use drugs by 'taken from a local drug dealer' being printed on both doors,” said Federspiel.
The sheriff also said the vehicle comes at no cost to the county because all fuel and maintenance costs are covered by drug forfeiture funds.
