Union Gets First Look At Nexteer Contract Offer 6-09-2010

WNEM TV5 has learned more about the details of a proposed labor deal for Nexteer Automotive union employees that could create hundreds of new jobs.
Hundreds of currently temporary jobs would also be made permanent under the plan.
One United Auto Worker, Jim Harvey, has worked at Nexteer for the last four years. He said he’s seen the new five-year agreement that UAW Local 699 has handed out to the union members, and he said he thinks it’s a good deal for the union, Nexteer and the community.
If approved, the contract will turn 320 part-time jobs into full time, and bring in another 200 new jobs to the Nexteer complex with a year.
While the new contract still needs to be ratified by the union rank-and-file, if approved, would replace a current contract scheduled to expire in September 2011.
Those who’ve seen the new contract said there’s an awful lot to like. No date has been set for the UAW members to vote on the offering.
Nexteer Automotive was formerly known as Delphi and makes auto parts at various facilities around the globe.
The Nexteer complex has been for sale for almost as long as it’s been known as Nexteer, and this new agreement would protect workers if a new buyer purchased the company.
