500 Jobs At Parts Supplier Tied To Pay Cut Deal 6-10-2010

The concessions proposal is on the table at the Nexteer Automotive plant in Saginaw County's Buena Vista Township.
UAW Local 699 said the plant will hire 200 people and move more than 300 temporary employees to full-time status if the agreement wins ratification.
"It guarantees some work out to 2015 and beyond and I think it’s actually going to allow us to hire more employees down the road," said plant worker Jim Harvey.

But those who oppose the contract are beginning to speak up. Mark Wilinski, a machine operate at Nexteer, said the contract is actually a step backwards.
Details of the contract show skilled trade employees would lose $8 an hour and production workers would lose $2.50 an hour. Temporary workers hired full time would get $14.50 an hour, and new hires would get $12.
"We're PO'd because the union is backing us and the international is backing us," Wilinski said. "The biggest problem we have with it -- is that the fact that the international owns part of GM -- and GM owns Nexteer. We don’t feel like we can get a fair shake.”
A ratification vote is expected within a few weeks.
The plant was formerly part of Delphi.
