Man Charged In Fatal Frying Pan Attack On Mom 6-10-2010

Prosecutors say when the frying pan a Flint teen used to beat his mother didn’t do the job, he reached for a knife to fatally stab her.
Thursday, 18-year-old Dalante Odom went before a district court judge to face murder charges.
Prosecutors said Odom attacked his mother, Victoria Odom, 37, earlier this week after an argument.
When Odom appeared via video conference from jail, he was clothed in a ribbed Velcro suicide vest.
Authorities would not say why each of Odom’s arms were covered in bandages.
TV5 spoke with one of Odom’s mentors following the arraignment who said he wasn’t aware of any problems between mother and son.
“He was a fine boy,” said mentor Kermit Hinkle. “No more than normal teenage problems that a mother and a son, or you know, that we all as parents go through with our children."
Police said the 18-year-old skipped class at Mott Middle College Monday and surprised his mother when she came home from a doctor's appointment with his 12-year-old sister.
Authorities said the girl was in the next room when police said Odom beat his mother in the head with a frying pan and then stabbed her multiple times with a knife.
Odom said little during his five-minute appearance in court and Hinkle said he hopes to speak with him Friday.
"I just [want to] tell him to keep his head up, seek the Lord, and to build his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ,” said Hinkle.
Odom will next go before a judge Tuesday to determine if he’ll stand trial.
Currently it’s unclear where the 12-year-old sister, or her two other sisters are living.
